Penn State's next coach...?

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been Penn State's stand-in coach the past month while an injured Joe Paterno watches from upstairs. But will Bradley still be the man patrolling the sideline if the 81-year-old Paterno retires? Former Nittany Lions' All-American linebacker LaVar Arrington, a three-time Pro Bowl performer who played seven years in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and New York Giants, thinks that would be the right call. Penn State has no succession plan in place, so if Bradley is the Lions' coach-in-waiting, no one in the Graham Spanier administration is saying.

Don't jinks this year with successor talk. Enjoy this run, PSU faithful, and bring JoePa a crystal retirement trophy. Ending your career with the most coaching victories of all-time (D1) and one final National Title... priceless. Can't write it any better than that.

This is one FSU fan who's hoping that JoePa rides out a champion.

If Bradley was smart, he'd get the hell out of Dodge while his stock is so high.

I'll remember this...you're all right! Be well...

And what? take over Pitt?...Penn State's his job to lose if he wants it...getting/keeping the right assistants is equally important.

Paterno has selfishly refused to turn over the reins of the program, despite years of obvious decline in the Penn program. Luck and a weak Big Ten have combined to give him a chance to get out on a high note. Sadly for football fans we are almost certainly going to be presented another joke "National Championship" game as Alabama or Texas Tech destroys Penn State, I figure about 54 to 10. The ONLY ranked team outside the conference that a team in the Big Ten played this year was Ohio State v. USC and we all know how that went. Sadly Paterno will likely use a championship beat down as yet another excuse to cling to his job. I see no reason that an undefeated Penn State team has anymore claim on the national championship game than Utah or Boise State, other of course that half the football reporters in America graduated from Big Ten schools.

Hey JoPa - so the right thing and announce NOW that you are going to retire at the end of the season. Go out with class, not with your Depends leaking.

OSU had players missing, first of all. Second of all, it isn't selfishness that keeps him there. Are you really that naive that you think he's been the one calling the shots for the past ten years? Come on. ANd your asinine assertation about the reporters is ridiculous. Even in PA we can't get objective reporters that love PSU...usually they are trash talking. Luck? What is wrong with you?Take your hatred elsewhere..

I would love to see Joepa go out with a championship more than anyone but i am still a little suspect of PSU's ranking...They really have not played anyone. I dont see them being able to hang with the maulers that saban has right now. I could honestly see PSU losing to MSU this year...I know it has not happened in a while but I have a hard time picturing PSU in a Championship, and if they do get there, I think it would be similar to Illinois in the Rose Bowl last year

mishagothe, i'm sure you're so smart and know so much about college football that you can predict games that haven't been played yet. does your genius work outside of football or are you an idiot savant like rain man?

who has alabama beaten? Georgia got crushed by the only two good teams they played (lsu is clearly overrated). clemson's 2-3 in the acc. how does anyone know how good they are? they likely won't be favored in the sec championship if they make it. any of the top teams could beat one another on any given day. so until i found out one of you big 12/sec homers is making a living betting games, i'll pay attention to people who do.

AARP has been tasked with finding the next seasoned citizen to take over for JoePA. AARP released the following statement: "We are glad to join Penn State in finding the new legacy for Penn State, our instructions are simply to start a new youth movement on campus and on the field, therefore we are looking at qualified candidates that are not over 62 years of age and young enough to know that Paul McCartney's first band was not Wings".

finally, oklahoma won the big 12 last year when the offenses were just about as good as this year and they got crushed by west virginia. i don't know how penn state would do in the nc game but they rarely lose big and they rarely lose bowl games even ones they go into as heavy underdogs

I don't blame people for being suspect of PSU, what have they done to impress? A win over OSU? Remember, the Buckeyes aren't very good anyway, right? Sure, they've put up pretty decent #'s on offensive; 8th in scoring, 11th in total yards, and yeah, the defense has been solid; 4th in points allowed, 6th in yards allowed, all the while being the 4th least penalized team in the fbs, so, what does that prove? I do wonder though where they should be ranked? Let's see, if I go by the wishes of the bloggers over the last 3 weeks, it should be somewhere after Tx, OK, TT, OKST, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, FL, USC. That's about 12th, right? What do any of those teams have to worry about anyway? A team as weak as PSU is bound to lose to at least 1 more game against an equally weak big ten team. And even if they don't, what will it matter if some of "higher" teams finish the season with 2, 3, or more losses and just maybe weren't quite as good as some thought, surely Big12 and SEC fans will still be arguing about the injustice of the whole system. Can we please just let the season unfold before we bash Penn State, their fans, their tradition and their coach. Maybe at the end of the season, Big12 fans and SEC fans will get the wish they so desperately long for, and PSU bashing will be passe'.

We all know JoePa isn't going to retire. He could win this year and still coach next season. This man is literally going to die on the sidelines. I don't mean to be rude at all, but he's going to coach as long as he is able to do so.

November 2, 2008  07:43 PM ET

"but Big Ten gets screwed every time somehow. Fact of life!! LOL."

Hey Trix, I'm not sure how the Big 10 gets screwed every time when Ohio State got into the last 2 NC games. And even with a November loss...sounds like the got the benefit of the doubt.

I also think that Jo Pa has hung around a little too long, but I admire him anyway. And although I don't think they are the best team, I hope that somehow they pull it off and win it all. Now that would be a great story.

Sorry to burst your bubble Utley but he's an FSU fan...obviously wants Paterno to retire after this year so Bowden can coach 1 more year and become the all time leader. That being said did anyone here not read Paterno's quotes in **** to the hip surgery? He said he wants it done on the bye week so he can get out and recruit right away after the bowl. Doesn't sound like a guy planning on retiring.

You can't use OSU vs USC as leverage. Penn state crushed Oregon State and Oregon State beat USC. Im surprised people aren't talking about this.
