The Mets are still eyeing Mariners free agent Raul Ibanez. They need a consistent hitter in the outfield, and Ibanez seems to fit what GM Omar Minaya is looking for.

The Mets will take anyone who doesn't end up on the DL tying his shoes(Moises Alou). I think that horrendous bullpen has to be retooled first. Heilman and Schoenweis must be jettisoned, and that's just a start.

Omar continues to look for older players. Ibanez is a good player but he won't sign for one or two years. So where does that leave the Mets highly touted Martinez. Plus Ibanez is a lefty David Wright can't carry all the right handed hitting duties. The Mets really need to address the woeful bullpen and two starting pitchers. I'm sure Omar can be innovative and unload dead weight, Heilman, Castillo, and others that don't fit into their plans. It won't be easy but the Mets need to get younger and let them grow into a championship team. We did it in 86 why can't we do it for next year. The nucleus is there we just need Wright and Reyes to be the leaders since they are the face of the team.

I agree with above. The bullpen must be fixed first.

The Mets are like my grandmother-
looking for bargains at knart
instead of spending money on QUALITY

Just what the Mets need, another thirty something in the outfield. Get younger, not older!!!They already screwed up picking up Delgado's option.

well that's not true-
he single handedly carried them in the 2nd half-
and for a one year deal.......ANYONE is worth it
in baseball where there is no salary cap

You can afford to be old in a position or 2......
not more than that

Quit eyeing my Ibanez!!!

November 2, 2008  12:33 PM ET

No No NO NOOOOOO!

November 2, 2008  12:34 PM ET

He's going to want $12 million+ and is a type A free agent..he's in decline and isn't worth it.

November 2, 2008  12:43 PM ET

As a Mets fan living in Seattle I've seen quite a bit of Ibanez over the last couple years and besides being left handed he would be a great pick-up for the Mets. He's a very consistent hitter and a stand up club house guy. On a team that quit playing in June he was the one shining light offensively. He's not the greatest fielder in the world but he's not the worst either, and he plays every day.

the mets dont need raul ibanez. the mets need to unload heilman to the As with ryan church for huston street. they can sign bobby abreu n put him in right. they can unload castillo to the dbacks for eric byrnes n stick him n left. sign orlando husdon at second. unload showenweis for a bucket of bp balls. let olli perez walk. sign garland as a number 3 starter (which would give them a rotation of santana, pelfrey, garland, maine, neise). and get a setup guy or 2 in front of street. thats wat they gotta do.

And without having spent two hundred million dollars. Congratualtions again to you, X. Once again, a team with choice scouting and managment shows the league how it should be done. One of these days, my Yankees, the Red Sox and other teams will realize the quick fix is nothing more than an elusive pipedream. How dare you set the modern-day standard along with the Rays and other low payroll teams and take the championship away from those who spend obscene amounts of money to acquire it.<scurries up Weapon X's Philly Fanatic costume and bites him in the nuts>

Something that you need to realize is that the Red Sox have found that out and now they are building through the farm system but when you have players that can help one other team and they can't help you because you already have 2 or more great people there then you can trade them for another player who will help your major leage team. The Yankees already tryed that and failed horribly. Red Sox players through the farm system these are players that were on the 40-man roster through the farm system Michael Bowden Jon Lester, Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie, Kevin Youkilis, Argenis Diaz, George Kottaras, Clay Buchholz, Manny Delcarmen, Justin Masterson, Jonathan Papelbon, Charlie Zink, Dusty Brown, Kevin Cash, Chris Carter, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jonathan Van Every. Now you can't truthfully tell me that the Red Sox don't build some through their farm system.

You are one well-informed marsupial.

Nit-picky I know, but they traded for Kottaras from the Padres in 2006. Cash originally came up with Toronto in 2002 and before coming to Boston as a free agent, played two years in Tampa Bay's system. Chris Carter was acquired from Arizona last season. Jonathan Van Every is a 28-year-old Minor League FA from Cleveland last year.

You're gonna need to be a little bit more liberal with your punctuation. You lost me at "can."
