Meyer uses timeouts to get back at Richt

Florida never whipped out any stunts or grandiose celebrations to retaliate against Georgia for its end zone celebration last season. But coach Urban Meyer did raise a few eyebrows with a couple of timeouts in the game's final minute even though the Gators led by 39 points at the time. After third-string tailback Emmanuel Moody carried the ball for 14 yards, Meyer signaled for a timeout with 44 seconds remaining. Another 17-yard carry by Moody and Meyer called the third and final timeout with 30 seconds to go. "What was the deal?," Meyer said, repeating the question. "Moody was running the ball real hard and I wanted to get him a couple of more carries. He deserved it." The Florida media laughed in scoff. "It seemed like you might have been trying to rub it in there," one reporter said. "No," Meyer replied. "Just trying to win the game." Georgia coach Mark Richt wouldn't let on if he was miffed, though the coaches' postgame handshake would have needed to be measured in nanoseconds.

Meyer was entitled to use his team's timeouts as he saw fit. Was Meyer trying to make a point? It seems so, but it was done well within the context of the rules. Richt took his beating like a man, so its all good. This is what college football rivalries are supposed to be... A mean, nasty, ugly battle played within the rules of the game. Either way, it looks like there will be plenty of ammunition between these two teams to make this a much-anticipated game for the forseeable future.

Hard to believe but this picture looks as gay as Meyer's last one.
Not saying............but.................why is that?

November 2, 2008  08:58 AM ET

No one believes Meyers explanation. If that were the case, you would get your field goad team out there to kick one at the end of games when you are ahead because they need the reps, or your second string QB would throw it around......It was a bit classless, but most people do not really care.

WELL DESERVED

Personally I was very upset he did not run the score up to at least 60. Considering the absolute fiasco us Gator fans had to deal with last year it was totally called for. The Ole' ball coach would have for sure. Revenge is always a dish best served cold.

I'm no Meyer fan, (and Holtz's excuse was ridiculous by the way for this) but I can't knock him this time based on last year...

November 2, 2008  10:28 AM ET

It just kills me that the Georgia Bulldogs gave themselves revenge for last year. Florida took advantage of the mistakes that Geogia made, but we shot ourselves in the foot many times and gave the Gators the entire game. If Florida had beat Geogia soundly then I'd admit it (b/c Alabama beat Georgia soundly), but Georgia beat Georgia which is typical Jacksonville crap.

I didn't believe that Myer was classes after the Miami game and people were complaining about the late field goal. Look's like I was wrong, this was an completely classes act by a classes coach. Last years celebration in this game was an attempt to fire his players up, and it worked. Using your time outs when the game is won, is classless no matter what happened last year. Any respect I had for Meyer and the Gators is gone now.

How can anyone say that given what UGA did the year before? If you feel this way about Meyer then you probably absolutely despise Mark Richt.

Meyer sent a message subtlely within the rules of the game and didn't risk an all out brawl on the field like Richt did.

November 2, 2008  10:55 AM ET

newman, theres a big difference imo.. what richt did was at the beginning of the game after the first points were scored, not at the end of the game when it was already won (which meyer likes to do)

its no surprise down here, hes been a **** for quite a while... his daughter is smokin hot though

November 2, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Your right, trying to fire up your team at the beginning of a game is exactly the same as calling time outs with the game handily won inside a minute left in the game. Thank you for showing me the light Newmanium.

I agree. Spurrier would have put up 60 easily. That was revenge and nothing more.

Hey Brockone76, First learn to spell. Second you got a lot of nerve calling Meyers classless with the coach Bama has. See you in Atlanta.

November 2, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Let's see if Richt encourages the bulldogs to be poor sports again after seeing what Florida just done to 'em. Hey Richt, you should've just slapped those black jerseys on your overrated team and burnt the hedges down, nice goin' ****, ya got what ya deserved.

His name is Meyer, not Meyers. You must be one of those sidewalk UF fans in jorts huh? Using the timeouts wasn't necessary but he was not throwing to the end zone as time expired like I expected him to. The Dawgs won't make excuses, they never do, they'll get ready for next week and re-assess their goals.

Is this a joke? It was 49-10. Florida beat Georgia soundly, period.

November 2, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Just remember Suburban, what goes around, comes around. Don't be upset when Richt or some other team returns the favor. It's a sad day when teams and coaches can't just act classy when they win big. Too bad the Dr. Tom Osbornes are no longer around to show people the epitome of class and true sportsmanship.

I'm glad Florida spanked them... That was a classless act last year by Georgia.

Way to go Noob, you cought one typing error in two posts, you must have gone to school at UF. That was the only thing you could nit-pick about because you know the rest is right on. And please, please explain how Saban has been classless. I would love to know! Oh, and if all you have is him leaving LSU for Miami and Miami for Bama, don't waste my time! Your beloved Meyer did the same thing to Utah.
