Cardinals interested in Renteria reunion

Coming off their most prolific regular season since 2005, the Cardinals are admittedly in search of a middle infield makeover, help for the left side of their bullpen and perhaps another starting pitcher. A persistent search for another "impact bat" to better protect first baseman Albert Pujols goes on but probably falls far down general manager John Mozeliak's shopping list. Interest exists in returning Edgar Renteria after the Detroit Tigers last week declined to pick up his option for 2009, making Renteria a free agent. The Cardinals would probably have interest in a short-term deal worth considerably less than the $10 million-a-year deal Renteria signed with the Boston Red Sox in December 2004.

he was better as a cardinal..with pujols

Are the Cardinals aware that he can only move 3 feet to either side?

November 3, 2008  07:33 AM ET

Maybe they want to try him at second. I'd be open to that; but, I'd rather keep Izturiz at short instead of putting Renteria there. At least Izturiz plays a fine shortstop. Edgar's best fielding days are behind him. You have to have a good shortstop when your pitching coach preaches pitching down in the zone to contact.

And his batting average drops 3 points every at bat?

This dog won't hunt. Edgar will be a liability defensively and pitching should be the greatest concern not getting a washed up middle infielder.

That might be too generous.....he's got the lateral movement of Stephen Hawking

The most concerning part of the article is the Cards remaining in a holding pattern on starting pitching to evaluate Carpenter. Get another quality starter NOW. There are worse things to have than an extra starting pitcher - not having enough starting pitchers is far worse. The odds of Carpenter ever coming back as a dominate pitcher are extremely slim. Replace him. If he does come back, consider it a bonus.

I don't want Edgar back........his time as a Cardinal has passed, and I agree that I would rather see Izturis defensively, with Lopez coming back to play second.

so what you're really saying is he's a FAST Paul Konerko?

November 3, 2008  01:58 PM ET

he belongs in the national league...he can't make it in the American League

most prolific regular season?! who cares about that. they won a championship in '06. I think they'd have a Championship with an 83-79 record rather than an 86 win season that brought them 4th place.

If the Sox miss out on Tex then theres this kid named Lars Anderson in the farm that could come up and be a big factor...
