USC's Carroll finds humor in BCS

Coach Pete Carroll typically avoids commenting about the Bowl Championship Series standings, let alone inviting questions about them. But even Carroll could not help injecting some gallows humor Sunday after the Trojans dropped from No. 5 to No. 7 in the aftermath of their third shutout victory in four weeks. "The more we win the worse we get," he joked. USC, a 56-0 winner Saturday over winless Washington, maintained its ranking in the coaches' and Harris Interactive polls. But the Trojans' weak Pacific 10 Conference opponents, coupled with the strength of the Big 12 and Southeastern conferences, hurt them in the computer component of the BCS formula. USC dropped from sixth to 10th in the computers, as Texas Tech and Florida jumped the Trojans in the BCS standings to Nos. 2 and 5, respectively.

Oh well Pete you had your moment in the sun, there's always next year.

I'm glad the glamour of "USC" isn't keeping them high in the polls. The PAC10 is weak....Ohio State is down....and Notre Dame is down (understatement). So even if they win out the Trojans still lost to Oregon State. They don't deserve to be any higher than they are. Suck it Pete.

You want to stay in the discussion then you don't lose to Oregon State.

No related to this thead, but I have nothing to do with the topic of this EMAIL received from "GO GATORS" who I will from hereafter refer to as ****:

Why? Oregon State isn't a bad team by any means. They'll likely end up with 8 or so wins. Why is SC losing to Oregon St. on the road worse than Florida losing to Mississippi at home?

November 3, 2008  09:31 AM ET

I am a USC fan
but I have to go with the BCS on this one, The two Washington teams they skunked are a combined
1-16

Gotta lookat the teams Florida has beaten compare to the teams USC has beaten as well...Florida has beaten far better oponents than USC...look at what they did to a top 10 Georgia team this weeki in Jax......

November 3, 2008  09:50 AM ET

That is unfortunate that they dropped. They are losing ground simply because the Pac 10 stinks. Add to that, it is looking more and more like they will be playing Ohio State again in the Rose Bowl. Maybe these events will help the Pac 10 and Big 10 Commissioners rethink their decision to a playoff, which they are both adamantly against.

And this argument is clearly why the BCS system is broken. If you look at teams that have been beaten, then because Mississippi beat Florida who beat Georgia who beat Hawaii last year who was undefeated who beat....

you catch my drift? BCS is garbage, but people's pockets are staying fat so it's not going anywhere.

Good point C-Smith...I think everyone agrees the bottom line is the BCS is sucky wat to determine a NC......

I'm a PSU fan, so you KNOW i hate the BCS today!!! LOL

November 3, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Yeah, remember when USC jumped Georgia at the beginning of the season? I didn't hear no belly-aching from Carroll then. Karma's a bee-otch.

They beat Ohio State (a preseason top 5 team) pretty convincingly. They beat Virginia (who won 9 games last year and will probably go bowling again this year) convincingly. They slipped up against a better-than-expected Oregon State team on the road... just as Florida slipped up against a better-than-expected Mississippi team. If you put Mississippi and Oregon State on a neutral field, it would be a pick 'em game. USC can't help it that Washington, Washington State, Arizona St. and UCLA are so bad.
I'll tell you what, put SC and anybody above them on a neutral field and you wouldn't bet your life on SC losing.. I know I wouldn't.

Im a Florida fan. And let me just say. USC (who Im not fond of) won. And won handedly. They shouldnt drop. Florida won. Id like to know how Texas LOST and stayed in the top 4, meanwhile, Florida, USC and Oklahoma win and are essentially punished for doing so. Even as a Florida fan, I find the bsc to be bs.

November 3, 2008  10:58 AM ET

This is why we should have a playoff. Though on the other hand USC did what they were suppose to against a D-III team dressed in D-I uniforms, while Texas and Florida played higly legit competition.

November 3, 2008  10:58 AM ET

As a USC fan, there may be a golden lining in this chaos. It may be that both USC and Penn State are kept out of the BCS NC Game. maybe that would finally motivate the PAC 10 and the Big 10 to end their resistance to a playoff.

November 3, 2008  11:20 AM ET

It looks like because the Pac-10 is down this year, USC will miss out.. It is unfortunate, because i think they really are the best team in the nation.. But, theyll still be in a BCS bowl if they win out.. so not all is lost..
I personally like the BCS because it makes every game so important.. Adding a +1 would do the trick.

November 3, 2008  11:28 AM ET

How many times in the last 5 years has USC been the beneficiary of BCS math? I think Pete should shut up, mainly because it always seems that USC always ends up getting the long end of the stick when it comes to the BCS.

November 3, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Obviously Texas Tech is going to jump them in the polls. Florida's 49-10 win over a top 10 team is a much better win than a 56-0 win over a winless Washington team. The #7 ranking is irrelevant for USC because they'll be playing in the Rose Bowl no matter what. Even if Alabama, Penn St, and Texas Tech all lose, USC is not in the top 2 of one loss teams.

Ummm... zero? USC has played in the BCS title game exactly two times and they were undefeated both times. The year they won the AP title, they were THE #1 RANKED TEAM IN BOTH THE AP AND COACHES' POLLS going into the bowl games yet Oklahoma got the nod into the BCS title game after being SMOKED 35-7 by Kansas State in the Big 12 title game. Every other year, SC has gotten into a BCS bowl (the Rose Bowl) by virtue of winning the Pac-10. Do your research before your start talking junk.
