Jackson wants more touches for Gasol

Where's Pauldo? Pau Gasol has been active and efficient in the first halves of games, but he has disappeared after that, a problem Lakers Coach Phil Jackson wants to correct by getting his power forward more touches after halftime. Gasol's early tendencies are the flip side of Kobe Bryant, who is typically more active in the second half. Jackson praised Bryant's game-saving flurry in the fourth quarter Saturday against Denver but thought Bryant's third-quarter activity was too much. "He's just not getting the ball in the second half," Jackson said. "In fairness to Kobe, he's playing the team game the first half and he's looking for his own situation the second half. That balance has got to even out a little bit." Gasol, who has been on the NBA equivalent of cloud nine since being acquired by the Lakers last February, shrugged off the decline of his second-half production.

lol

Laker Nation, can you say "Oh no, not again?". Phil is right on this one. Gasol has a lot of post moves down low and is very efficient. The Lakers have to make use of him. It's okay for Kobe to take over sometimes but he has to have faith in the system. All these things will work out in the future and will make the Lakers much stronger. Kobe is the best player in the world and can do anything anytime he wants to but he needs to get his teammates involve.

what's the Lakers record ?

- who cares about how many touches he has at this point?
it's all about getting ready & primed for the PLAYOFFS

November 3, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Typical Kobe. What else is new?

November 3, 2008  09:26 AM ET

yah thats something they definately have to change. kobe is one of the best players currently, but his team can do alot as well. only if they get some touches, will they be able to show their skills

You have to get Gasol more touches and make him more involved in this office. The Lakers are 3-0 and the season is early, so there is no need to panic but I do agree with Phil here. Try to work in some more touches.

The Kobe hate started really early today.

Its ok.. Kobes needed to take control a bit, especially in the last game..

My question here is and I am most interested to hear from others more experienced than I. Do you really think when the heat is on that Gasol wants more touches? Watching the finals last year. HELL NO. Watching the Olympics Gasol was a man possessed. If Jackson can somehow tap into this then LA can truly be a force to be reckoned with. As good as Kobe is, it has been shown over the past 20 years (I'm going back to Jordan, havent seen a lot before that) that a champinoship team as well as haviong one true HOF needs at least 2 solid allstar/role player types.

What Jackson is asking for is not unreasonable, but can Gasol bring what he has for his country to his NBA team? That's the question the Zen Master is trying top unravel.

There is no hate here, just the truth. Nobody is hating on Kobe. People are just suggesting that if the Lakers are going to be a lot better then Gasol and the other guys have to get involve. It's Kobe's team and it's really up to him if he wants the team to get better or he just wants the glamour to himself.

Whatever...what's the Lakers record so far? That's all that needs to be said. Blowing teams out by 37 is just not enough for PJ...he prefers 50. As long as the scoring is balanced, there should be no question. However, I have a feeling PJ's playing mind games again. He's telling you that Kobe's doing his thing in the 2nd half...next game, Kobe will go off for 20 in the 1st quarter.

If there are 5-7 players in double figures and we're beating teams by 37 points, I doubt he's too upset about it.

Phil is not playing mind games here. He is telling the truth and he is trying to improve the team for the future. You should be satisfied on what he is trying to accomplish. He is trying to make Kobe a true leader. Kobe can sacrifice some of his offense to give others to mesh as a team. This is for the good for both Kobe and the Lakers.

Guam Baller,

The man has averaged about 16-20 points while everyone else scores about the same. He had to score 30+ on Saturday because they were shooting about 35% and he carried the team in the 4th quarter. He had to step up and he did. The guy's had a ton of assists in every game and people still think he's about himself??? You've got to be kidding me.

November 3, 2008  02:26 PM ET

He's asking for more touches for Pau because Pau's fading in the 2nd half. That doesn't mean Kobe's taking those touches. When Pau's in with the end unit with Farmar, Ariza, and Vijacic, those guys tend to get 3-happy so it's understandable that Pau isn't getting too many touches. Farmar also loves to drive to the basket which negates Pau's presence in the post anyway. For you to say that he's not getting touches because of Kobe is ridiculous. The times of blaming Kobe for everything are old. PJ means he'd like both players to be more balanced...not that Kobe's taking Pau'd shots away. Sheesh.

Slow ur role, Kobe Bryant had to take more shots late in the Denver game. The team really was not making shot when he had taken over. Next week will be a challange because of having to play 4 games in 5 nights, starting with Houston on Sunday. After next week we will see what the Lakers are made off.
