Brewers make Sabathia big offer

The Brewers have within the past day or so presented a multiyear offer to superstar free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia that is believed to be in the $100-million range. But while that's an incredible, unprecedented move for the small-market team, and Sabathia remarked several times during the season how much he liked playing and living in Milwaukee, the Brewers are still viewed as a major long shot in what promises to be a spirited derby. Brewers GM Doug Melvin this morning confirmed that an offer was made to Sabathia but declined to discuss the dollar figure for the 28-year-old left-hander who went 17-10 with a 2.70 ERA overall and 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA with Milwaukee. Word here is that the proposal was for four or five years and between $20 and $25 million, and quite possibly for $100 million over five years. The competition will be stiff. The Yankees, desperately hoping to upgrade their rotation, are expected to make a big play for Sabathia, and at least the Dodgers and Angels are expected to show strong interest in the Vallejo, Calif. native as well. The world champion Phillies could also emerge as a surprise entrant in a derby that's expected to wind up well into the nine figures. He could beat Johan Santana's record $137.5-million Mets contract, though probably not with the Brewers.

Yes. I am sure they made a good solid offer. But common sense would say that other teams are going to make better offers. So just like he is probably thinking after feeling insulted.....Big Deal. Wht would anyone want to stay with that team after they dropped the manager after the entire season was played??????????????

November 4, 2008  05:45 AM ET

It won't happen. CC isn't fat enough to play for the Brewers long term.

November 4, 2008  05:52 AM ET

I still believe he will sign up with a big market team like NYY, Red Sox or LAA. Tomorrows news will be all about yanks and sox offers.

November 4, 2008  06:15 AM ET

Nothing less than $160 million is going to sign Sabathia. The Brewers know this. They are only putting up a show for the fans.

1 tubby tubby... 2 tubby tubby.

The world champion Phillies could also emerge as a surprise entrant in a derby.....

I love reading that.

Enjoy the Sabathia era, Brewer fan? Wave bye bye, cause the really big bucks await somewhere else.

November 4, 2008  08:10 AM ET

CC is good, but it a Brewers ploy to say atleast we tried when they do not sign him, read an article where Melvin said we have the money to offer him, if CC declines we will not spend that money on another high end pitcher. Let alone if Fielder stays the Brewers would not be able to afford the buffet table after 162 games.

November 4, 2008  08:20 AM ET

CC will be a dodger. I hope he spurns the Yankees and the Sox.

November 4, 2008  08:33 AM ET

After the way CC messed all over himself in the playoffs, I'm surprised anyone would want to sign him. He should be forced to wear a jersey with "Brett Myers' ****" stitched on the back!

November 4, 2008  08:44 AM ET

I read that CC will stay in Milwaukee as long as they widen the slide in the left field bleachers so he can ride down it on non-pitching days.

November 4, 2008  08:50 AM ET

It took me a while to find where I read it, but it was from a SI report:

"This is probably a special case,'' Melvin said. "It's not like whatever we offer him we'll have left'' to spend on someone else.

"I'm not a big free-agent guy,'' Melvin said, adding with a smile regarding his days as Texas GM, "even though I signed A-Rod.''

Like I said a ploy for the Brewers to say we tried, we lost be we tried.

agree-

They won't lock up 1/3+ of their payroll on this guy

After losing out on Johan last year, the Hank the Yank won't let this one go. Probably close to $150 million. That's alot of twinkies for CC...

November 4, 2008  10:10 AM ET

He is a good pitcher but did he win the Brewers a playoff series? He got them into the playoffs. Let him walk. Dont forget how he choked against the Sox in 07.

He did it the year before with the Indians too, yet the league still went crazy.

This being election day and all, I feel I should get on my bully pulpit and push my political agenda. I would like to expand upon my campaign slogan of "No Tomorrows." As you all know, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a concern to us all. After countless hours engaged in exahustive research, my crack team of scientists have confirmed what I've thought all along: What's the best way to get rid of nuclear weapons? USE 'EM!

Good for the Brewers that they are trying to make a serious offer and show their fanbase that they will try to compete but realistically they know they have no chance. Knowing the Yankees will blow away any offer the player's union as well as his agent will not advise CC to leave moeny on the table. If CC gets a big payday then every pitcher next year gets one as well.

November 4, 2008  11:39 AM ET

The Angels need to pass on K-"non-clutch" Rod and Mark "bat for hire" Texeira and make a run for CC. That would make for a punishing pitching staff and groom another closer.
