Dodgers interested in Varitek

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein spent the day watching Clay Buchholz in an Arizona Fall League game, then showed up at the St. Regis Hotel, where his No. 1 priority will be the Red Sox' catching situation. Toward that end, he will meet with agent Scott Boras over the next couple of days to discuss where the team stands in re-signing team captain Jason Varitek. Epstein wants to leave the meetings with a good sense of whether he can re-sign Varitek. A couple of executives speculated that there might be a new team with interest in Varitek: the Dodgers. There is a Boston connection in owner Frank McCourt, and the Dodgers could play Russell Martin at third some of the time. Another possibility is the Tigers, who need a catcher to calm down their pitching staff, though they may not be able to afford Varitek.

Boras is really trying to sell Varitek to all the teams. But hopefully Varitek will end up in a Red SOx uniform preparing Salty to the catching duties/.

Boras? It looks like the Boston Globe can't wait to get Varitek out of town.

Of course they are. McCourt's got a rager for most any ex-Red Sox.

Tiger's not afford Varitek? How much will he cost? More than a tube of IcyHot?

But I still don't think any team in the NL will take Tek. I just don;t think any team wants two poor AB's per 9 hitters. At least in the AL, where you can possibly stack 8 other guys (no pitcher batting) you have a chance to overcome his poor batting.

the NL?
he was hitting low 200's in the AL & you're going to go
to the NL??? he may not even hit 200.

And why would you sign an aging, AVERAGE defensive catcher
when there is no DH?
- if this is true it is DUMB on LA's part

V-Tek was going through a Divorce this year. I think it really messed him up.He is a solid defensive catcher and handles the pitching staff very well.Sox re-sign him and he goes out and hits around .260 - .270..

Agreed. It truly amazes me how one off year can bring a guy's perceived value down so quickly. Varitek is an awesome catcher, and wherever he is he's going to have a great year. Hopefully it's not the Sox, because he knows that staff so very well and is more valuable to Boston than anywhere else he could go. They are a much better team with him behind the plate. That having been said, Muck Vason Jaritek.

McCourt couldn't buy the Sox when they were for sale so now he's buying them one at a time.

I hope the Dodgers reconsider this. For one, he has proven to be a name, but not a clutch player. Secondly, should Manny sign with the Bums it is starting to look like Sox west in the dugout and could start the Manny turmoil again. Build from within and save the cash for some solid pitching and possibly another solid bat. Varitek just doesn't make sense at all.

No doubt. This joker the other day was trying to convince me that Tim Wakefield is not worth the meager $4M that the Red Sox signed him for.

;-)

This coming from "The worst fielder in baseball"....taken at face value. LOL!

November 4, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Zero sense...Martin definitely needs more rest next season, but replacing him during those rests with a "captain" that can no longer hit? No thanks. Plus, what give with all this "captain" crap!?

The nerve of that guy.
