In a short interview with reporters in the hotel lobby, the agent for the left-handed closer Brian Fuentes said that the Mets were indeed one of the teams interested in signing the 33-year-old Fuentes. The agent, Rick Thurman, said he planned on speaking with representatives of the Los Angeles Angels, the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers, among others, about signing Fuentes.

Why do I get the feeling that K-Rod has talked himself into a position where no one wants to bother making an offer that will certainly be refused?

November 4, 2008  06:19 AM ET

Brian Fuentes is the next good closer out in the market. I would have him for a lesser price than what k-rod is asking.

eh

Someone like Fuentes makes more sense for teams like the Tigers who are trying to get better while cutting costs. The Tigs have got to do something though...

November 4, 2008  08:24 AM ET

This has been a story since before the all star break. Tell us when he's traded, otherwise....who cares?

I think we should take a long look t him in that we will not have to give him the same kinda money let alone years that K-Rod would be looking at. DETROIT 09! Whoot! I mean hey- we can't be worse when your already last right!?

Especially when KC is still in your division...

I still think we should be considering moving almost anyone on this team besides the young guys. We need to build a complete, talented TEAM, not a team complete with many individual TALENTS.

He'll be a Met even if he has to be ridiculously overpaid. The Mets have a much greater need. That bullpen is horrific.

November 4, 2008  09:18 AM ET

What is John Mozeliak asleep? The Cards should be front and center on Fuentes........they have open payroll, and Mo has already said they aren't adding to the rotation or getting an impact bat.......so.......why isn't he going after Fuentes hard?

November 4, 2008  11:26 AM ET

K Rod hurt himself by letting it be known he wants a mega deal. Fuentes will be a far cheaper option and possibly the better choice. K Rod lost some zing on his fastball last year and never pitched more than 3 outs in a game. Fuentes can come in for 2 innings and has lost nothing on his fastball. I see Fuentes going to the Angels to replace K rod while the Mets pony up big money for K Rod.

This guy is overrated and not a WFC.

Yeah but relievers are always going to get paid well since most teams are always trying to improve their bullpen. And once K Rod signs a mega deal look for everyone else to get a raise.

November 4, 2008  01:54 PM ET

Mets had better do something for their bullpen this off season,,,
And K-Rod will be the but of jolkes if he actually gets the money he thinks he is worth, I knew Mariano, and K-Rod is no Mariano, he isn't a Papelbon either, or a Nathan...

November 4, 2008  05:37 PM ET

First off, the Mets are NOT going to get K-rod, not while they still have to pay Billy Wagner 11 mil next season. The Mets are going after Fuentes first. Watch what I tell you. Now me being a die hard Angel hope the Angels get Fuentes and just part ways with K-rod. We will get a draft pick from whomever signs him. I am not opposed to keeping K-rod but not for 15mil per. I think they (angels) offered him to much last year at 11 per. I don't like those closers who put runners on base and last season even with the record there was ALWAYS somebody on or two runners on with K-rod and it drove me crazy. He is not worth Mariano money in my humble opinion.

November 4, 2008  05:39 PM ET

I meant to say the Angels offered K-rod 13 mil per, and that is too much also.

November 4, 2008  06:54 PM ET

the mets should get huston street, trade for him omar

November 4, 2008  09:38 PM ET

The Angels, if they don't bring K-Rod back, don't need Fuentes. They always have quality bullpen arms coming up through the minors. Jose Arredondo stepped up huge this year (61 innings, 1.62 ERA, 55 K). I think that he and Scot Shields could handle the eighth and ninth innings very handily. Jason Bulger, while not young at 30-ish, pitched 43 innings with 16 saves and 0.63 ERA for AAA Salt Lake (after looking at his stats he didn't do so hot at the big-league level this year). He could provide a quality arm in the bullpen. There's also Darren O'Day, and Kevin Jepsen, both of whom put up some quality numbers in Salt Lake and LA this year. And don't forget Justin Speier, who had sub-3.00 ERAs three of the last four years and has been a quality setup man.

As an Angels and K-Rod fan...I would have to agree......

I think he played is cards all wrong. If I were a GM with deep pockets, I wouldnt even try to talk to him....
