Cubs still looking at Peavy

While the original off-season emphasis for the Cubs was on acquiring a left-handed-hitting outfielder, starting pitching is taking on more importance. It appears the Cubs have taken a renewed interest in former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy because free agent Ryan Dempster apparently will not re-sign early. The Cubs have exclusive rights to negotiate with Dempster until Nov. 14, and then he will be free to listen to all offers. That could be bad news for the Cubs, who would like Dempster back but may not be ready to offer as many years or as much money in this pitching-thin free agent market.

And what "talent" do they have to trade away???

November 4, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Though Peavy's throwing style scares me, Send Hill, Cedeno and Fukudome to the Padres for him.

Who really wants Fukudome? I wouldn't... Especially as a Sox fan, I know what it's like to have real outfielders.

I agree who wants Fukudome, would give the Cubs a chance to get rid of him and San Diego was one of the teams bidding for him. Never know stranger things have happened....

The Cubs are not getting Peavy for Fukudome.

How about Javier Vasquez? The Sox will give him away for free.

If you read all of the comments you would know that I stated 2 other players, anyone should know that a 0ne for 0ne trade like that would never happen. Hill with some potential for the rotation, Cedeno for SS as Sandiego is looking to get rid of Greene and Fukudome as a throw in

It doesn't matter even if the Cubs get Fukadome. The Cubs will have a great regular season next year and will choke and crap in their pants in the play-offs, just like the last 2 years.

But all the Cubs fans will be happy because of the great regular season, regardless of the play-off futility.

Cubs already have Fukudome, you mean Peavy oh and by the way Sox did a pretty good job of doing the same against a $35 million payroll team

Well, the Sox lost to a pretty good Tampa team. they at least made it competitive. They didn't beat themselves. Tampa played well and deserved to win.

The Cubs were heavily favored to win the World series this year. Whay do they do? They got swept by a pretty average Dodgers team. It was not even close. Once they fell behind, the Cubs showed no fight.

Hey, who needs playoff wins when you have Wrigley field?

November 4, 2008  02:00 PM ET

They will be looking at him next season too, on another team.

November 4, 2008  04:02 PM ET

IF they traded Fukodome, who would they sign to play in the outfield. All I see right now is Soriano in left (assuming Fukodome is dealt, that is). Is Reed Johnson still under contract or was he a one-year rental? And is Felix Pie ready? Just curious.

CF , you can't say anything that Kenosh... er um Chisoxmark will understand. Just another troll who has nothing better to do than spout the same nonsense over and over again. Funny how a lot of trolls are named Mark. It must be his inferiority complex coming to a head. We can only hope that daddy pays more attention to him at home.

Aha... budman is finally here. can't face the facts. In denial, just like the rest of the Cubs fans! It's so easy to rile up Cubs fans!

You are just jealous that the Sox won it all in 2005. That's OK budman. Cubs will get their turn. You just have to wait for another 100 years! Wait a second... 100 years? who am i kidding? This is the CUBS we are talking about. It's 100 years and counting. Good luck!

If t he Cubs do nothing but pick up Bobby Abreu from Free Agency this off season they will be in a much better place than last year.

do they have the talented prospects for this trade?

Are the Cubs trying to corner the market on injury prone pitchers?

I guess the only pitchers in the major leagues who aren't injury prone must pitch for the Whitesox !!!

Wow... you figured it out all by yourself?

The fact is the Sox pitchers are quite durable overall. Well, other than Jose Contreras, but he's 50 years old. Give him a break :)
