Tennessee commitments wavering

Running back Jarvis Giles doesn't know what to do. Rated the second-best all purpose back in the nation by Rivals.com, Giles is set to graduate from Gaither High School in Tampa, Fla., in time to enroll at Tennessee in January. But those plans were thrown in doubt Monday with the announcement that the man who recruited him and ultimately persuaded him to become a Volunteer, Phillip Fulmer, was removed as coach and is leaving after the season's final game. Giles' predicament illustrates the dangers when a big-time college football program decides to fire its coach and move in a different direction. Tennessee's 2009 recruiting class is ranked sixth-best in the nation by Rivals.com and currently has 21 commitments. Only LSU's recruiting class is ranked higher among Southeastern Conference teams.

Last night I went to a seafood restaurant and I had Angel hair pasta with white-clam sauce. When I got home I had raging fire-ball diarrhea for five hours. I thought you should all know that

I get it...you don't think this article should make "Truth and Rumors."

If I were a Tennessee recruit, I don't know if I'd jump ship just yet. With the resources and tradition that school has, they should be able to draw a top-name coach. Its one hell of a lot better gig than Washington or Clemson. I would think any up-and-coming coach would jump at this.

THE absolute funniest post on the planet. Ever.

This is to be expected. Recruits sign to play for a coach, and not to attend a college. It's sad but for a lot of these guys it's true.

Who cares what they do. Fulmer or no Fulmer, UT is a great school for an education first and for sports second. If they don't want to come to Tennessee for the education (fully paid for by scholarship) then let them go elsewhere; there are plenty of other guys needing a scholarship. Only one out of a hundred highly ranked recruits turn out to be worth their scholarship.

That was Duke's philosophy of recruitment for the past twenty years, and look at where it put our program! But hey, we lucked up and got Cutcliffe from the Vols and things are looking a bit brighter.

Yup, I hope Duke has a big buyout clause in there if he leaves... cause I am sure UT has already called him.

It wasn't the white clam sauce, it was probably the gerbil!

Good education? I am sure Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry disagree with you since they left there having less than a 6th grade reading level yet they never missed a game because of eligibility questions. Fulmer let the criminals run the assylum there so any recruit who's expecting to get away with all the crap that former athletes got away with have to reconsider going there because the next coach cant possibly be as leanient.

What was their reading level when they got there?

How much lower could they possibly have been? I knew Jamal Lewis scored terrible on the tests at the NFL combine but never heard about Henry. I guess Henry can raise his level while serving time in jail now.

hey UT will be fine. Fu;mer was a terrible coach and was only helped by the fact he had cutcliffe the past 2 years. now that cut left, the whole thing fell apart. Now maybe they can hire the real genius in cut or mike leach

Sounds like you have a lot of a hate and anger in you. Now tell us whats really bugging you. Could it be you just have np atheletic skills and can't walk and chew gum at the same time. So you hate on guys that have skills. You need some love in your life and stop all this hatin.

If I was a Volunteer recruit I'd be totally stoked. I mean I don't know why they'd want a 30 year old, fat, alcoholic, but if I could go back to college, that would totally rock. So I don't know what these recruits are thinking.

Maybe they brought their coloring books with them as freshmen and took the SAT's with crayons?

"Rated the second-best all purpose back in the nation by Rivals.com, Giles is set to graduate from Gaither High School in Tampa, Fla., in time to enroll at Tennessee in January." As the world has been watching this entire last month, a seriously talented running back could immediately contribute to the University of Texas Longhorns' running game. Running back Darrell Scott graduated from high school last spring and would have been the feature back at Texas this year, but his momma decided for him to attend the University of Colorado to be with his uncle.

November 4, 2008  07:38 PM ET

yes UT is a good school but so are all the others that are competing with them for the recruit. As a recruit I think you would like to know the coach actually wants you and not just trying to keep the previous regimes numbers. I would wait to see who is the new coach but I would have a back up plan in place in case you don't feel the love. I'm sure they are all talking to their number 2 and 3 schools right now to see if those scholarships are still available, and if they don't then either they are die hard or just idiots. look at Michigan, how many kids wanted nothing to do Coach Rich. He attracts some, repels others.

The biggest question is "who" will replace Fulmer and more importantly, "WHEN" will he be named?

With Fulmer agreeing to finish out the season, when will a replacement be named? No existing coach ( be it Cutcliff or someone else ) will agree to an announcement during the season...as they do not want this to be a distraction for their existing team.... which leaves the recruits twisting in the wind all season wondering who will be heading up the Tennessee program?

Just how many blue chippers will be willing to wait until sometime in late December or early January to find out who will be named Fulmer's replacement? The longer Tennessee waits to make the announcement, the closer they get to Signing Day... and the fewer the scholarships at other schools will remain....

Some blue chippers will stay... some will no doubt leave and sign on with another school where they will at least know who they will be playing for...

This is NOT a good situation for Tennessee as recruits hate uncertainty... and the Tennessee situation is full of uncertainty. It will be interesting to see how Tennessee handles this as the season progresses.
