Rodriguez: 'I've been here 10 months...Geez'

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez wouldn't comment on the job done by defensive coordinator Scott Shafer, saying it's "unfair" to ask him to criticize a coach or player. "I'm never going to point a finger," he said. "Because we struggled at times in different units doesn't mean they're a bad coach. I'm sure a lot of people are saying that I'm a bad coach. Everybody can have their opinion. But I've been here 10 months. I feel as good as I have as far as I know we can build this program to be one of the best in the country. It's not showing that right now, but we can do that. It may take us longer than what I thought. ... We'll get it right. I mean, everybody wants to push the panic button. Ten months, geez."

Uhh... you went to Michigan.... we sort of aren't used to losing.... like, ever... not like this...

How about at least one finger back to yourself?

funny? I always thought Michigan was one of the nation's top programs. What you more or less inherited you have now trashed and become a laugher. Good job Rich. I know the population of West Virginia is wishing you continued success.

UMM... maybe if you can pull one out against Ohio State people will get off your back.

Look, as a UM fan I knew this season could get pretty ugly and it has. I thought the team would improve throughout the season but that hasn't happened. Michigan just sucks and this season is lost. But it's his first season and I came in giving him 3 seasons to implement his vision. Next year has the potential to be a bit rough as well. But again, I will rough it out with the team as well. I do expect the third season to bear fruit. That is when RR will be held fully accountable as he will have his players running his offense and D.

The sad thing is that the D was suppose to be the anchor of this team but they have been atrocious and the reason why this team has faltered this year.

Still, GO BLUE. There are 3 more games left and UM still has a chance to win them. Miracles DO happen!:P

Look it's a young offensive line, and a quarterback who is a horrible fit for this offense. This team suffered this year, will probably struggle next year as well with a new young QB at the helm.

I would say that Michigan will turn around in year three of the Rodriguez era. If this team still sucks in year three then fire him but until then it's not really fair or plausible to criticize him.

I am not a Michigan fan but tend to agree here. This season is pretty much lost and is a bitter pill to swallow for the Michigan faithful. What has got to be troubling is that they don't seem to be improving. But, give the guy a little time. Look what he built in West Virginia. Think about what he can do in Ann Arbor.

Worked in reverse for John Cooper once. As an OSU alum and avid Michigan hater, this game always scares me and this year will be no exception. If played on paper the Bucks win big. But since the game is played on the field, one can throw out win/loss records and all the other stats. Hope coach Tressel gets this message across to the players loud and clear. Might not be a bad time to start the senior QB who has had four years to come to understand what the OSU/Michigan game really means.

And as for RRod; God do I feel sorry for the UM players. No finger pointing? The **** has pointed fingers his own players by calling them out in front of the media. Remember his comments about the defense a few weeks ago? He's a class-less act. Glad UM has him, and after they tire of his dictatorial rants (must be compensating for shortcomings of another sort) I doubt anyone else in D1 will have him.

Oh yeah. Go Bucks!

The honeymoon is officially over Dick Rod. He just doesn't get it. The program did not need to be torn down and rebuilt. This did not have to happen. The Dick Rod clock is ticking. Anyone who believes that Michigan has a prayer against OSU needs to step back from the Kool Aid table and have a big glass of reality juice. Bill Martin has yet to make a decent hire since becoming AD. Somewhere Lloyd is chuckling to himself.

he would have looked looked like a genious if tyrell pryor would have landed in ann arbor... he has the mind, just not the right players.

November 4, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Ron English wasn't THIS bad at D.C. They need to get rid of Scott S. Hire a GOOD D.C. This won't fix all the problems but it would help

But he didn't land in Ann Arbor, did he? If, if, if. If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

I agree, about the one thing that would give any wolverine fan any pleasure about this season is upsetting OSU. Not saying its very likely, but it would be one spot of sweetness.

Having followed WVU for years, I think that Michigan folks have something to worry about here. If you take a very close look at the years RR was at WVU, there is some really frightening stuff:

First year: 3-8 - as expected, a bad year (new system etc)
Second year: 9-4 - very good year against the "full" Big East. Expectations start to rise
Third year: 8-5 - decent year. Big East still has original members and many of them are ranked.
Fourth year: 8-4 - another decent year BUT consider, this is the first year after the Big East starts to change. No Miami game this year (probably 7-5 if Miami is in there)
Fifth year: 11-1 - the first "great" year with RR. However, consider two things: No Miami, no Boston College (added UConn). This is also when Syracuse starts to absolutely stink. Another BIG thing this year = PAT WHITE and STEVE SLAYTON.
Year Six: 11-2 - another great year - but consider: VTech drops from the schedule. Pat White and Slayton still going strong.
Year Seven: 11-2 - another great year. Pat White and Steve Slayton.

When you look at this objectively, you have to admit that the changes in the Big East led to a MINIMUM of two wins per year. When you take away Miami, VTech and BC and add Louisville, South Florida, Cincinnati and UConn - you have to assume that you will be +2 in wins.

So you take a very good 9-4/8-5 team and give it two more wins each year, you get an 11-2 or 10-3 team. With Pat White and Steve Slayton, how could WVU NOT be a 10 win team.

Since the competition in the Big Ten is much stronger than the Big East is, Michigan fans need to hope that RR can get a lot of really strong talent to run the offense. Two phenoms like Pat White and Slayton were good enough to roll in the Big East - but I think Michigan will need more to dominate the Big Ten (great QB, RB AND some great receivers and more on defense than WVU has had).

This is exactly why I cannot stand RichieRod. Let's review. How many years in a row had UM had a winning season? 30+ years? They did that thru two prior coaching changes (Bo to Mo to Carr) Now this arrogant arse struts in like he invented the game, thumbed his nose at Michigan's tradition and began to show them "how it is done." The team has not improved so far this season. One question: where is there any reason to believe that RR can recruit and coach a top notch defense?

This is the BIG TEN, not the watered down Big East, a point that WVUFanHidingInOhio nicely made. A stable of speedy, but small players will not be successful in the Big Ten. McGuffie is an example. They went to Minor (a Carr recruit) after seeing that McGuffie won't hold up.

I think you are missing the big picture........
by EVERY analysts count-
your buddy Lloyd's recent RECRUITING failures are what
put mich in this position.
Rodriguez's system is perfect for college-
he took WV to NATIONAL prominence & they beat some
damn good teams in the bowls- OU, Georgia........
granted the big east stinks- they wouldn't have won if they stunk

When you put your defense on the field as long as this squad has to play week in and week out, it doesn't matter what your conditioning system is. This team also lacks senior leadership. Mallet, Manningham, Arrington, and that dope Boren who split for OSU would have really helped this young squad. They will rise again. Rodriquez is a top caliber coach. His day will come. The Big House will rock.
