Nationals target surprise signing
The lowly Washington Nationals are aiming to make a surprise splash this winter and have been connected to talks involving star outfielder Matt Holliday, star first baseman Mark Teixeira and possibly star pitcher A.J. Burnett, SI.com has learned. "We might surprise some people,'' a Nationals person said. While the Nats are involved with several big players, some believe they have little chance to land any of the big ship -- with, one exception. "I could see them getting Adam Dunn, but only if they overpay,'' one competing GM said. According to the competing GM, their pursuit of Holliday is a particular pipedream. "They don't have the players. Who are they going to trade? Many of their guys are broken down."

This will never happen, period. Ownership will never give up enough dough for Bowden to make a big signing. Like the article says, though, Dunn is a possibility for them. He'd probably be overpaid and yet within what the Nationals could afford if they throw another couple million into a seasonal payroll. But about the only thing he brings to the table is a knack for smacking the longball, and that won't fix the Nationals' problems.

Are the Lerners smart enough to know that to earn some $, you have to spend some $$$?

They knew how to get a 950 milion dollar stadium, outright, while at the same time destroying any hopes of winning...maybe that was harsh...but true.

Well, Detroit was able to lure Pudge Rodriguez to sign with them when the team was god-awful. You never know; maybe the Nats have one heck of a sell...

I don't doubt this trade, have you seen who the GM of the Rockies is. The Rockies will probably get nothing for Holliday, and I woulnd't be surprised because the owners here want to win but definetly not "at all costs"

Ehh, this is the Nats. I think we all know that they MAY get lucky and guys like, Juan Rivera, Mark Grudzelanic, Matt Stairs, or if they are lucky enough Ken Griffey Jr.
The Nats have the good sense so far not to overpay for anybody, however the Nats do not have the necessary credibility to attract any other non-superstar player.
Hard to see the Nats getting Holliday, who exactly would they trade for him? Miledge?

Yeah, like anyone wants to move to the D.C. area. Talk about over-priced real-estate.

Kenosha, u are right. Before the mortgage crash, $400,000K would get you a 3 BR townhouse 30 miles outside the city (in a not-good , not-terrible hood) that turned into a 1.5 hour commute one-way during rushour. It still remains terribly overpriced up here.
I have gone to about 10 Nats games and love to cheer against them because I know the other team will win.

Well, being that Holliday's about to be an incredibly over-priced player, he may feel at home.

Nats are building through the farm system. They will bring in one or two slightly above average players this year and next year, but their aim is to start winning in 2011. Keep in mind how MLB management decimated the Expos farm system by not being willing to pay any of their draft picks. It takes time to rebuild that aspect of a team. I could see Dunn, potentially, who would be a good pick up for them. But the rest of the names are being floated out there just to appease the fans and make the team seem relevant.

Much like Sabean in SF, Bowden has the GM eqivalent of tourette's. He can't help himself to saying 'yes' to deals with underperformers or trades for players that he can't or doesn't want to retain. The Nationals need at least one corner OF, a 1st baseman, re-sign Guzman (or someone) at SS, add 3 starters, add 2-3 bullpen arms, and build a reliable bench (instead of a collection of guys that essentially add up to failed prospects and injured one-dimensional veterans).
Much like the Orioles of the last decade, if the Nationals add ANY significant free-agents, they are going to be older ones looking for their last payday (ala Palmeiro/Javy Lopez) or they will have to grossly overpay (ala Tejada). NO player in their prime would willingly go to a team with no history of winning, no budget to improving, and a GM so bad he was booted from Cincy (!!). My prediction is a Dunn/Bowden reunion, having the perennial 40 HR player sign on for 4 years/$56M... and reaffirm Bowden's compulsion to try to win with players he couldn't win with in Cincy (Kearns, Pena). Beyond replacing a DH with delusions of being a position player (aka Dmitri Young) with another, I just don't see the Nationals having any access to anyone significant in play.
