After more than three decades in coaching, North Carolina's Butch Davis has gotten used to having his name linked to other jobs when they come open. So he didn't seem particularly surprised when he was asked Tuesday evening whether he had any interest in the Tennessee job, which became vacant when Phillip Fulmer was fired this week. Davis' response: "The long and short of it is that the administration and I are completely, firmly committed to building a championship football program at North Carolina. And my family and I are very happy in Chapel Hill."

In other words.....I like it here, but if the Vols throw me a boat load of money and a free house I'm outta here faster than you can say "Rocky Top"

November 5, 2008  08:31 AM ET

not how i read it but I am extremely biased. I hope he stays at Unc and gets this program turned around.

That's kind of how I read it too. I love it here, until someone attempts to double my salary. Then: I'M GONE!!

We need to start fixing up Keanen if we are going to keep him around.

November 5, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Its Kenan, and yes we are in the middle of fixing it up.

November 5, 2008  10:50 AM ET

he was real loyal to miami, even asked players to stay and make a run at the title, even gave a speech about being a deadbeat dad if he left, then bolted when money was offered. If tenn comes calling and has more money, bye bye butch. sorry n.c.

November 5, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Yeah, he said the same thing in miami. Later for UNC

Right on Rob...

November 5, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Why would UT want him?

Cause he is makign miracles happen at a basketball school. Imagine what he could do at a real football school.

November 5, 2008  03:23 PM ET

6-2 at an ACC (ie: basketball school) is a miracle? It was a miracle that he got hired. What Texas Tech and Alabama have done this year is somewhat of a miracle. Not Butch Davis and the Heels.

Yes, what he has done at UNC is amazing. Who was the last memorable coach who had success at UNC? Oh, wait, he's that long-run coach at UT-Austin, Mack Brown. You don't get Mack Brown or Butch Davis too often. Enjoy it UNC.

November 5, 2008  04:11 PM ET

let me say it again "i am not going to the be the head coach of the univerisity of alabama"!

nough said!

November 5, 2008  08:44 PM ET

Butch Davis and Dave Cutcliffe will be the "Greg Schiano" of the 2008 late season-early 2009 period.

November 5, 2008  09:49 PM ET

Tennessee has not offered either of these coaches. This is pure speculation, Cutcliffe will sure as heck not be offered because of his age and the fact that Tennessee wants to clean house. Lane Kiffin was in Knoxville today and is considered one of the top 3 candidates along with Brian Kelly, Gary Patterson, and possibly our dream coach Jon Gruden, who has ties to Tennessee. Looks like Muschamp is going to Auburn, so that takes him of our list because Tuberville is supposed to step down within the next week.

OK, I can make up stuff too...
Peyton Manning was secretly flown in to Knoxville today and will be offered the job bc his knee will not heal. Tuberville will drive away in his sub compact like Tony Frankilin did...AU will then hire Lane Kiffin who will make Phil Fulmer his offensive line coach just to make the AU/BAMA game even more hated. Miss State will fire Croom, and then hire Cutcliffe to rub it in the Rebels faces. Clemson will announce that it is tired of not living up to expectations and will be dropping its football program to focus more on academics and womens sports. Mike Leach will leave Texas Tech and go to Somalia to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a pirate.

November 6, 2008  06:28 AM ET

Kenan stadium is in the begining phases of a 200 million renovation. The administration will pay him to stay like they did last year when he was offered the Arkansas job. He's not going anywhere.

November 6, 2008  09:17 AM ET

UNC has way more money the TENN . thats just fact

November 6, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Tenn can offer bd much more money than unc, there is already talk around there that they will pay the new coach around 3 mil if not more, they sell 108000 tickets per game, you can buy a lot with that

I have to agree he may well be gone. But I dont think it would be a wise choice he is doing well at UNC and starting to build some solid recruiting classes. Plus he is in the ACC where he can dominate. Is all the extra money and free house worth the intensity and competitveness of the SEC? not to mention the suceed now or chop off his head fans.
