Illini WR who broke teammate's jaw will play

Jeff Cumberland and Mikel LeShoure got into it Saturday night, a few hours after Illinois' 27-24 victory over Iowa. But Cumberland will be in uniform Saturday when the Illini take on Western Michigan at Ford Field in Detroit. And LeShoure is out indefinitely while the broken jaw he suffered in the altercation heals. Coach Ron Zook declined to discuss specifics, but his decision to let Cumberland suit up indicates he believes both players were at fault but that neither should lose playing time because of the fight. LeShoure just got the worst of it, and he's out. Cumberland, a 6-foot-5-inch, 251-pound junior wide receiver from Columbus, Ohio, missed the first two games with an injury and is sixth on the team with nine catches for a 21.6-yard average and two touchdowns. LeShoure, a 6-foot, 240-pound freshman running back from Champaign, is the Illini's fourth-leading rusher with 126 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. Each has started once. Defensive end Derek Walker said he believes the team will not be distracted.

What a shock that Zook has no plans to discipline a player. It's been proven that anything short of a double homicide will fail to push the Zooker into action. What a loser.

He needed to watch for the hook.

Anyway, Zook needs to step in and discipline this guy. It's about time that he starts laying down the law.

Agrred J. Hova, this is not what the coach meant when he said he wanted to see smash -mouth football!

The guy who got his jaw smashed obviously had it coming to him.

I'm sure you are comparing the Illini program to those bastions of discipline you have down there in Florida huh? Does Miami or Florida State come to mind dooshbag?

Besides, you don't discipline a wide receiver for beating up a running back!

November 5, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Here's a crazy Idea... if they're both at fault why not punish both of them? Zook is such a joke he should be the next coach of the Bungles.

November 5, 2008  12:04 PM ET

wow, what a surprise, another coach afraid to discipline his players.

I'm not a fan of either team you mentioned but yeah, I'm calling out the Illini program and their head coach for being a tool. Zook has proven time and time again that he has no intention of disciplining players with the only exception being that a crime or act is so egregious that the school or public scrutiny demand action. Zook is not an upstanding guy. At Florida, he actually went to fraternity row and nearly incited a riot when he challenged some fraternity members after an altercation had occurred between some players and the fraternity members at a party. But in true Zook fashion he violated his own team rules and school standards of conduct in doing so. But wait, he wasn't done. He actually defended his players for a fight that they CAUSED while attending a function in which none of the involved parties were members. It gets better. When it was all sorted out by the University of Florida Police, it was determined that:

a) his players were the cause of the original incident
b) his actions were not only wrong but ILLEGAL and it was in fact Zook and the players who were warned that they had to leave
c) HE WAS AT THE WRONG @##$ING FRAT HOUSE causing the disturbance.

Yeah Ron Zook is awesome.

And on a side note. If your're going to use an insult. Learn to spell it ****.

Great post, L&O.

To Gator fans who aren't Zook apologists reading this you're preaching to the choir, but you're spot-on and I agree 100% with what you've said.

I'm not surprised that the Zooker let these two guys off with what amounts ot no more than a slap on the wrist. No matter where he coaches, Zook will never be more than lax when it comes to player discipline, and little does he realize that this isn't a good reflection on his football program. (OK, our players are far from being saints at UF, but Meyer responded to our two latest incidents properly by dismissing both players from the team. Zook wouldn't have acted in the same fashion; that's almost a given.)

The Pi Kapp "Fratgate" incident and his inability to deal with player discipline were two of the many other factors that eventually got Zook fired at Florida back in October of 2004. Not only did he violate his own team rules and school standards of conduct by behaving the way he did in trying to instigate a fight, he brought shame on himself AND embarrassed both the Florida football program and UF as a whole.

Some Illini fans may accuse us of Zook-bashing, but hey, facts are facts. Zook seems to be digging himself a hole at Illinois based on some recent goings-on; apparently he didn't learn anything from his past experience at Florida. If he winds up getting fired up there, he'll have nobody to blame but himself.

I know you meant that "Yeah Ron Zook is awesome" comment to be sarcastic. Zook is an idiot and a loser - nothing more, nothing less.

Agreed...coming from someone who watched him in FL.

Mr Miyagi, I usually enjoy your posts. Most of the time, you make me laugh.

Today, however, you decided to attack my 'Noles, and for no good reason. You are obviously entitled to your opinion, and I'm sure you don't care what I have to say, but you should try doing a little research before you speak about things that you clearly have no knowledge of. Do some FSU players screw up? Yes, they do... just like players at every college in the country, including Notre Dame. The critical question here is: Does the school discipline those players when rules are broken? At Florida State, the answer is "Yes"... the same as it has been throughout Coach Bowden's tenure. Besides, as a Notre Dame fan, haven't you got enough to worry about?

typical zook reaction to disciplining his players. we have seen this many many times. the athletic dept should step in and do something about this. these kids have no reprocussions to their actions.

November 5, 2008  04:37 PM ET

I don't think you punish two kids on a football team for fighting. You have a bunch of jacked up guys with their own opinions and their own mouths. I doubt the kid walked up and punched him in the face for no reason. They are grown men and choose what and what not to do. I'm sure nobody forced them to throw on each other. They got into a fight. One got knocked out. End of story.

Yes, but if incidents like this cause friction in the locker room that can affect team unity, then the coaches have a potential problem on their hands. If they get to the point that they affect on-field performance, then they become a major problem.

Right. I agree. I think in an instance like this you sit both of them down and figure out what the problem is. They can either choose to get along or you can figure out who is most in the wrong and then they go if you feel that it is best for the team.
