Randolph, Valentine on Mariners' list

In a strange quirk, Willie Randolph could end up a serious candidate for the open Seattle managing job. New Mariner GM Jack Zduriencik just recently left his post as special assistant to the GM in Milwaukee. And Zduriencik sat in on Randolph's job interview last month for the Brewer opening. Thus, Zduriencik does not have to bring in Randolph during initial interviews for the Seattle position, but can nevertheless weigh the candidates he does summon against Randolph. It also is possible Zduriencik could still reach out for Bobby Valentine. He was the Mets' farm director when Valentine was the Triple-A manager, and their relationship is said to be solid. Plus, there is some feeling in the Seattle hierarchy that someone with stature is needed to manage the Mariners' marquee player, Ichiro Suzuki. Valentine is believed to have a favorable relationship with Ichiro.

I dunno about anybody else. But personally, I'd love to see Valentine back in the Majors. He's a great manager and knows the game better than most current MLB managers. As a bonus, I've heard he learned Japanese pretty fluently while he was over coaching in Japan as well. Come on, how can this guy NOT be ideal for Seattle after this season?!?

If there ever was a perfect scenario for the return of Valentine it would be with Seattle.

Look, there is no way that Eddie Money is ever going to let Randolph out of his contract. This is a ludicrous discussion. Jeez...

They don't need a low-key manager...they need someone to instill some life into the clubhouse. Valentine certainly can fire up the team and is the better of those two choices. However, does Valentine even want to come back to MLB?

I really like Randolph but Valentine makes perfect sense.

Randolph is going to be with the yankee's so the only choice here is Valentine

I thin Seattle should be looking toward a high baseball-IQ manager with experience working with a developing team. Bobby Valentine is a good baseball man with the ability to take a developed team into the post-season, but he may not be the best choice to take a team with a small core and a declining payroll, essentially needing to overhaul their club. The Mariners organization should be looking at Tony Pena (with good success on some imbalanced and inexperienced Royals teams) and Alan Trammell (same with Tigers) as guys who can intill sound fundamentals and help the kids work as a team. If Seattle's front office is serious about building a winner, they should think about BUILDING one, and get the best man for THAT job.
