Padres still working to deal Peavy

The hang-up in the Padres' trade talks with the Braves regarding ace Jake Peavy is Atlanta's reluctance to trade its elite prospects. One of those prospects is 22-year-old right-hander Tommy Hanson, who throws 93-95 mph and has a plus slider and plus curve. He recently threw four hitless innings in his first Arizona Fall League start, walking two and striking out nine. It's easy to see why he has become untouchable, even for Peavy. Said Braves GM Frank Wren, "Some scouts have told us he might be Peavy in two years." Meanwhile, the Padres are still working hard to try to find the right deal for Peavy, who has a no-trade clause. He has named the Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals and Astros along with the Braves as his preferred teams, and might also consider the Angels and Yankees.

Peavy is one of the best in the game. If you want the best you have to give up something.

November 6, 2008  05:39 AM ET

well there's always a risk there...if you dont trade him for peavy and he turns out to be another phil hughes then braves lost. but if his a peavy in the making..good for braves..

The Cubs better get him before the Cards or Astros do!

The Peavy trade story will be the biggest non-story of the Hotstove period this winter. People and writers in some parts of the country need to read what is being written in San Diego papers. If I read one more dumb **** from a New York or New Jersey paper link Jake to the Mets or Yankees, I'm gonna blow my brains out. If the Braves, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers don't give Kevin Towers what he wants he's NOT trading Peavy. Plus, Peavy's true desire is to stay in San Diego - a fact many writers aren't publishing. Peavy will be the 2009 Padres season opener. July 31 trade deadline? That's another story...

Somehow, I see another Santana story this year with Peavy. God help us all...

I believe the term is Mr. Glass.

Also... He's not worth the price. He's a great talent but he's a 5 inning pitcher with Javy Vasquez-itis (meaning he's not the big game pitcher the Cubs would need).

And yes, if the Cubs got anyone, they need to get players that be cluch. Because they obviously don't have any.

Who's that guy in your picture? He looks happy.

yawn.....

November 6, 2008  08:52 AM ET

As a Mets fan I got to admit that I am annoyed that he would want to be a Yankee but not a Met.

I like Peavy, and personally I don't care where he is traded to as long as it's not Atlanta. I don't want to see him in a Braves uniform.

November 6, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Send him to the Cubbies.

November 6, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Peavy had a bad year due to injury so the Padres are not going to be able to get 100% value for him. If they really want to trade him it might make more sense to keep him now and hope he has a good 1st half next year and then trade him before the deadline when his stock is much higher and he could net the Padres a bigger and better haul.

I had similar feelings about Santana and the Mets last year. It makes me happy that the Mets still couldn't win after they threw around cash like its monopoly money.

The Mets tried to do business the Yankee way circa 2003. And after 8 years of no WS titles I think everyone sees that signing loads of free agents does not work. You can't buy a WS plain and simple.

Why is Atl so hot on this guy-
they are not on the cusp of winning their division or even making the playoffs next year simply by adding one pitcher.... why would they give up a POTENTIAL front end of the rotation guy - who's LOCKED up cheap for years for Peavy?
This makes no sense to me

I agree. Braves have a good team but they are more than 1 move or player away from making the playoffs. Phillies and Mets are stacked for years so Braves would need everything to go right for them and major injuries and slumps to hit the Mets and Phillies to make the playoffs.

November 6, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Well Peavy is locked up until 2013 (but not that cheap). So he's more than a rental. He's someone to build a rotation around for the next several years.

Also, I don't see the Mets as being stacked for years. 3rd base and SS don't make a whole team. Who plays first in 2010 and beyond? Left field? Catcher? Do they trust Castillo for 3 more years at 2nd? Who's coming out of the bullpen? They have as many trouble spots as the Braves.

Very good point but the Mets have $$$ they are willing to spend so they can plug holes a lot easier than the Braves can. But yes I was mistaken to say the Mets were stacked for years. Phillies are and I quickly grouped the Mets in with them in that regard.
