Rockies, Holliday far apart

Matt Holliday and the Rockies are so far apart in negotiations that both sides understand there's no chance for a long-term deal, which is why he's on the trading block. The Rockies offered Holliday a guaranteed $68 million over four years, plus an option that could bring it to $85 million, according to people familiar with the talks, and that isn't half of what Holliday, 28, may get as a free agent after 2009, assuming a typical season in the coming year. The Rockies are talking to teams about deals involving Holliday, who hit .321 with 25 home runs and 88 RBIs last year. But it's going to be hard for them to get equal value considering he's only a one-year rental. The Rockies have a good young team that underachieved in 2008, and their people all love Holliday, a great leader as well player. But they are fearful of repeating the nightmare that is Todd Helton's $144-million contract, so they want to avoid multiyear deals that bring the player into the mid-to-late 30s.

Great in colorado, marginal elsewhere. this is where agents eff up a good thing for both sides by inflating a guy's worth and convincing the athlete that he actually IS worth that inflated price.

I'll jump on the bandwagon for this one. His numbers away from Coors Field are, exactly, marginal at best. But some team will buy into the hype. We'll just have to wait and see who it will be...

I think he should turn up the heat on his negotiations with the Nats. The air here is just as thin as it is in Colorado ... how else do you explain George Bush?

Not sure if I agree with that....
What 'stud' type player (in their prime) are you basing this on?

They won't want to give him a 9-figure deal, so they should trade Holliday now to the Phillies for bullpen help and cash. Phillies need a LF and they would be better off signing Holliday to a long-term deal instead of giving Burrell what he is looking for as a FA. If they wait till the July deadline, they risk him getting hurt and then getting virtually nothing for him.

The Rockies definately need to keep Holliday! I know that they want to avoid the same style contract that they gave to Todd Helton some years back, but Todd Helton never, ever was the Run Up to the NL MVP (Who Should Have Won it in 2007) and Helton never put up the numbers for the Rockies as quickly as Holliday. The Rockies are still incredibly young and under played their ability by a tremendous amount last year, that is why they still need someone to be a clubhouse leader. The Rockies can afford Holliday, and should. Especially with Todd Helton nearing the end of his career, and definately feeling it (Helton was out of the season for almost half of it, at least). I know all too well what Matt Holliday means to the Rockies and all of the Colorado Baseball fans. It is a disgrace to Holliday, and all of the Rockies fans that Dan O'Dowd is "open-minded to anything at this point, and a premium starter is not required." Again Dan O'Dowd you are messing around too much with the chemistry of the team, this is a professional team not just some sort of lab experiment. PLEASE KEEP HOLLIDAY!!!!!

It would only be a rental as he is a Boras player. Doubt the Phillies would resign him.
