Dodgers make Manny an offer

The Dodgers deal that was proposed to Manny Ramirez on Tuesday night would give the 36-year-old free-agent outfielder "the highest average annual value in the history of the franchise and the second-highest average annual value in baseball" -- somewhere between the $27.5 million per season earned by Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees and the $22.9 million earned by Johan Santana of the New York Mets -- according to General Manager Ned Collett. Colletti and Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, refused to specify the value or the length of the contract, though indications are it is either two years for $50 million or three years for $75 million. Colletti acknowledged that the proposal was in line with his philosophy of offering players higher annual salaries in exchange for shorter deals. He said the offer includes an option year, meaning it's possible only two years could be guaranteed. Boras has said at the general managers' meetings in Dana Point this week that Ramirez deserved a six-year contract that would pay him until he is 42. It remains unclear whether this is an earnest bid by the Dodgers to re-sign the player who took them to their first National League Championship Series in two decades, or a half-hearted attempt to appease fans who became enamored with the dreadlocked slugger.

Well I guess if you REALLY want to sign Manny this is the best way, throw lots of money for a short contract so you don't have to put up with his inevitable BS down the road.

There is no way any team will give a 6-year contract after the stupidity he displayed in Boston. Best case is a two-year with and option for a third. That way, if he starts his "Manny being Manny" crap again, you only have to deal with it for two years. That's in an ideal world. In this world, someone's gonna give him at least 5 years and a boatload of money. I feel for whichever team pulls that trigger...

November 6, 2008  08:15 AM ET

$20. Take it or leave it.

November 6, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Smart, this guy is a RISK if it is a long term deal.

November 6, 2008  08:43 AM ET

If he gets an offer of three years at 25 mil a year, he should take the money and RUN. Or roll. Or pee on it, whatever. But he should definately agree to it and count his lucky stars.

November 6, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Manny and Boras are all about the money. He would go play in KC if they gave him 4 years at $25 mil per.

After Meche, I wouldn't put anything past KC at this point lol.

November 6, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Take the three years Manny, Noone should give him more. I think two years is right, three is pushing it, four and Manny will be Manny again before the ink is dry on the contract.

November 6, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Dodger fan here, and DEFINITELY want to see him back for the next 3-4 seasons. However, 6 years is too much. Boras is once again ruining baseball and more concerned w/ taking his percentage from this pending contract. Dear Scott Boras - Thanks for screwing fans and making baseball greedier and greedier year after year. The sport would probably be much more enjoyable and less stressful for organizations if you were not involved.

They will NEVER live that one down!

The Dodgers paid Andruw Jones 30 Million to hit 3 HR and bat .167. He'll be lucky to play AAA next year. 6 years to Manny will seem like a stroke of genius next to that.

Me too, unless it's the Yankees!

LOL, they should sign Ben Sheets and AJ Burnett also, Pavano will need some company on the DL next year.

November 6, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Pavano did not have his option picked up.
So basicly if anyone signs Manny it is too bad for the team, they are getting screwed, unless it is the Yankees in which case they just sign old sucky guys and that would be their fault, gotcha...lol.

Seriously, Pavano is no longer a Yankee? I guess it doesn't surprise me, but I wasn't as down on the guy as some of you. I liked his stuff when he finally came back at the end of this year and he said all the right things. I didn't think a backloaded incentive-laden one-year contract with a one-year team option would have been too much to throw at him.

'Course, if you threw it at him, you might injure him ...

Now, wait a minute.

On the Pettitte thread, you said that Pettitte was worth $10-11M. Meche has been better than Pettitte the last two years and is making $11M per. Something doesn't add up.

How would you know if Meche was better?

November 6, 2008  03:52 PM ET

You told me once.

November 6, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Oh, alright.

November 6, 2008  04:57 PM ET

Manny and Boras are going to decline that offer immediately. They want Arod money for 6 years so how do the Dodgers think offering less than Arods salary at only 2 or 3 years? If they offered $30M for 2-3 years then maybe they would have a chance but I see Boras wiping his arse with that offer.
