Dodgers losing ground in Manny sweepstakes

The Dodgers' two year-offer to Manny Ramirez -- believed to be for about $45 million -- is very unlikely to lead to a quick deal between the sides, or perhaps any deal. The sides are so far apart that the Blue Jays, Orioles and perhaps the Yankees and other teams likely have moved ahead of the Dodgers in terms of their chances to win the services of the mercurial superstar. Those outside teams aren't eligible to make offers until Nov. 14, but the Dodgers have thus far failed to get a jump start on the others with a proposal so far below Ramirez's asking price that Manny is likely thinking more seriously about outside options now. The Dodgers might consider upping their bid at some point, but if they do, a person connected to the team suggested it would most likely be only a bump in salary, not in years, at least initially. The Dodgers may eventually come close to matching A-Rod's record annual salary with a two-year, $55 million proposal, but will likely need to be pushed by fan response to go to three years, according to that person.

That is a cheap offer. For real. Give the man a five year deal and show the worl the Dodgers have a pair.

November 7, 2008  05:41 AM ET

Nobody will offer him a 5-year deal...he might do another Manny being Manny bullsh*t stunt. oh well...

Yeah, think with your pair and not with your brain. Anything over 2 years is too much for Manny. But by all means ... give the fans what they (think) they want. We wanted it too!

Sign him for ten years, just not on Philly!

Seriously though, what we need is MORE BS Manny threads on T&R.

November 7, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Well, if it's a two year offer for 22.5 million a year, they're out of it. He's going to need 25 million a year for at LEAST three years.

I think we can arrange for that ...

Description:
Trade Kemp to Yankees for 2b Cano.
Keep Pierre in case Jones has career ending season. Worst than 2008 i don't think he will have.
Seek for bench players and i think with this team they could get to the World Series. Remember they had an injury filled year and yet they made it.

Is this not getting absurd....the amount of money to play this game

November 7, 2008  08:46 AM ET

A two year deal makes sense. If you give Manny the deal he wants...5 - 6 years, your going to have another situation like he had in Boston.

I;m assuming you mean to the yanks???

If it was 2 MAX 3- I'd do it.
but DEFINATELY not more than that

ps- how frekin' cheap are the dodgers.....?
I mean at least give him 25 per if it's 'only' a 2 year deal
-it's not like they're poor

I sure do mean the Yankees. If they can get him for three at 25 million per, maybe with a club option for a fourth, that would be a coup. And I think that Dodger offer was what we thought it was going to be ... something that would tell their fans "well, we tried, what can you do?"

Agreed!! Plus he will be into his forties, which is old for a baseball player.

When I first logged on and did not see your gumpy mug, I worried there would be no moronic comments to make gleeful fun of. Thanks for correcting that.

November 7, 2008  10:37 AM ET

TYPICAL DODGERS! They have 4 million fans per year, high ticket prices, and they can never pony up for a REAL SUPERSTAR! But they sure know how to waste money on jokes like Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, and Jason Schmidt.

November 7, 2008  10:37 AM ET

3 years $75 Dodgers!!! Man-up for Man-Ram!!!

November 7, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Boras told them it would take 5 years at Arod money to sign Manny. So the Dodgers go and offer only 2 years and at less money than Arod makes. What kind of negotiation is that? If they want a shorter deal then they logically would have to increase the money offered. If anything the dodgers just told Boras and Manny not to bother because the Dodgers are not serious about signing Manny.

November 7, 2008  10:46 AM ET

I think it is funny that Boras tries to mention how Colletti did a long term deal on Bonds when he was the same age as Manny. Yeah he did but because Bonds was the face of the franchise and if the Giants let him go their attendance would be on par with the Marlins on a Wednesday afternoon. Also Bonds was going to break the home run record so they needed to lock him up long term to ensure he did it while a member of their team. I love how Boras tries to compare situations that are no where near alike.

25 per for 2, Manny being Manny ain't gonna cut it in the Stadium. Then again he does hit the long ball...

That's just a few dollars more than what the Dodgers supposedly offered him. Not gonna happen, he won't take a two year deal, even with a club option on the third, I guar-on-tee it. 25 per for three, club option on the fourth. Maybe without the option, but three will be the least he will take.

I know this, of course, 'cause Manny and I are so close.

Manny has good ch!t right...that has to be it...
Can he even run in the outfield? I can't remember seing him actually run full speed, ever.

If your job gave such raises, you wouldn't complain would you?

A moot point. We have plenty of outfielders. Manny can save it all up for his DH spot. No worries about dogging it or peeing on things any more. Well, he might pee on third base once or twice per game, but I think it's worth it.
