Sources: MLB won't let Cuban buy Cubs

Throw out Sam Zell's idea of selling the Cubs by the end of the year because he still hasn't reached his goal of narrowing the field from five bidders to two. And sources close to commissioner Bud Selig sounded an alarm this week during the annual general managers meetings: Forget about Mark Cuban buying the Cubs. Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks' owner, was the fan favorite, the guy who liked to drink beer, watch the game from the bleachers and spend money. He was the most appealing bidder to Zell's group, who knew Cuban could swing the quickest transaction for a team and ballpark that at one time figured to fetch $1 billion. Global financial crisis or not, baseball's old guard plans to stand firm against letting Cuban into the club. ''There's no way Bud and the owners are going to let that happen,'' a Major League Baseball source said this week. ''Zero chance.'' This would be a blow to Zell and Cubs fans who are eager to get finality on a team that's in limbo.

Gotta love the cronyism in baseball................

November 7, 2008  07:19 AM ET

And this is yet another reason why Bud Selig SUCKS!!!!!! Come on! You got a guy who has the money, has the drive and desire to win and has a proven record of turning teams around. Yeah, he gets a little overzealous and passionate about his team. Lord forbid we have someone like that in baseball. Because that would just make too much sense...

November 7, 2008  07:34 AM ET

Why would he want to buy the Cubs anyway, so he can be with a loser for another 100 years.......

November 7, 2008  07:46 AM ET

Cuban traded Devin Harris, two first round picks, 3 million cash, et al for Jason Kidd. He should probably limit his team involvement to little more than writing checks and rooting for his team from the bleachers. He's the Jerry Jones of basketball and I don't blame Selig for not embracing Cubans "enthusiasm".

Wow. You're exceptionally retarded.

November 7, 2008  08:00 AM ET

What!? Is his money too green? The Cubbies and the fans need some sort of emotional pickup. Why not let the "luckiest man in the world" buy the most unluckiest team in the World!? Stupid...

November 7, 2008  08:00 AM ET

Bud Selig and the majority of MLB owners really BITE!
Wake up old white guys. This is the 21st century.

Bud Selig needs an enema!

November 7, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Isn't this illegal? I don't know baseball bylaws but if the highest bidder is passed over seems to me there is an issue here - antitrust maybe? Fair competiton act? or something.... This is a case where I would love the gov't to step in.

November 7, 2008  08:15 AM ET

So it is acceptable to be a cheapskate and not give your team any chance to win, but it isn't ok to actually care about what is going on in the field of play and be enthusiastic about it? The uncouth, loud Steinbrenner family is ok for baseball, but Cuban isn't?

Rather pathetic when you come right down to it.

You miss the point entirely. If you scold Cuban for making a trade to try to put his team over the top and win now - then please give him credit for turning Dallas into a team that has been very good for quite awhile. And while we're at it, perhaps you should go back and watch the Finals were the NBA gave the title to Miami and DWade, when it's clear Dallas was the better team, and if not for some highly questionable calls - they would have won the whole thing. Cuban is not like Jerry - he hasn't traded for guys who are soon to be in prison - or a cancer like TO. Cuban would only HELP the Cubs, he'd spend money to field a winner. Bud is a jerk - and should be removed from office. He screwed the Wisconsin area out of funding for the Brewers new park, and then sells the team for a windfall profit. Selig IS Satan and must go.

November 7, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Big mistake.
I hope Selig and his cronies (MLB as a whole) take an absolute bath next year. Hopefully with the current economic situation, we'll see MLB's greed and stupidity result in half empty stadiums in 2009....that includes the new overpriced staidiums in NY.
