Mets targeting closers

Mets officials expressed interest this week in top free-agent closers Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes and Kerry Wood. Fuentes appears the clear-cut target while K-Rod's asking price appears to exceed the sum the Mets would find palatable. One Mets official doubted former Nationals closer Chad Cordero, a free agent recovering from July shoulder surgery, could be counted on from Opening Day and pegged him as an option perhaps who would garner only a minor-league contract to be invited to spring training. On the trade front, team insiders say three potential targets have been identified at closer: Oakland's Huston Street, Seattle's J.J. Putz and Houston's Jose Valverde.

Ya think!...........Since Billy "blown save" wagner is finished.

So let me get this straight - Kerry Wood goes from being one of the biggest jokes in baseball to a 'top free agent closer'? It's funny how two seasons in a different role changes people's views on a guy...

Seriously, this is just one of the many holes the Mets have to shore up this offseason. I would be concerned with all of their pitching, not just the bullpen. That starting rotation didn't look so great after Santana this season. I doubt NY can get it all done this offseason, but many pieces could be put into place to help close the deal.

YEAH, Since Wagner is DONE!! I am so glad we got rid of him and his attitude in PHILLY and got a real closer like Lidge!

November 7, 2008  10:11 AM ET

What? I thought Santana was enough to win it all? Oh well...

I'd rather have Oil Can Boyd than Captain Back Spasm

Hmmm, I'd say Pelfrey looked dominant from June on, Perez turned it around after Rick "Jellybeanhead" Peterson got fired and Maine was hurt, but is a viable 3rd starter. The Mets focus has to be Bullpen, bullpen, bullpen then they should address the starting pitching.
They should sign two closer quality guys and dump everyone from last year except stokes.
