Weis' knee is a wreck

The verdict on Charlie Weis' injured knee is in. And it is a bit of a wreck. Or, more accurately, what a knee might look like after a wreck. "(The doctors) said it's not even an athletic knee. It's a trauma knee," Weis said Thursday night. "Like getting hit by a car. You guys saw it. That's probably about what it looked like, force-wise." Aside from his MCL, Weis said, virtually every other crucial part of his knee has been vaporized. The MRI showed numerous holes were key ligaments should be. Thus Weis has begun a 12-week regiment to strengthen his hamstring and quadricep muscles, the step that must be taken before any surgery takes place. And if surgery takes place, Weis said, it would be in early March. Then a six-to-eight month rehabilitation process would follow.

Lucky for Charlie that the rest of his body is in such fantastic shape.

No Crap!
A) Did ya see the rolled up hit he took!
B) He puts 300 pounds on it every other step!

No doubt this T & R will produce the usual number of sophomoric "fat Jokes" but I hope his players will play with the sense of commitment that he has demonstrated for the last four games of the season. Not sure I could take that much pain with every step.

I wonder of Charlie will see the same doctor as Tom Brady?

November 7, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Damn that sucks.

Only of Brady's surgery was videotaped...

November 7, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Oops... I mean "if"

This will limit his participation in recruiting and Spring practice.
Further, if the surgery does not go smoothly, it might be require a Leave of Absence, if not resignation. Interesting implications.
If the team does not finish the season well, this may be setting the stage for a graceful exit for Charlie as ND's coach.

He should see the same physician that "treated" Eight Belles.

I rest my case...

I give him credit for staying on the sidelines and not coaching from the press box.

Maybe Miyagi can work some magic on Charlie the way he worked it on Machio.

Shouldn't the NCAA require some sort of fitness standard for coaches? I mean common you're supposed to be roll models and mentors to these young kids. What kind of message are you sending if your 300lbs+?

November 7, 2008  01:23 PM ET

And, remember to keep the weight off the leg....... go lie down.

Yeh, too bad Notre Dame doesn't have the legacy Hoosier football does!

November 7, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Gee, that's even a halfway decent picture of Charlie...someone must have felt sorry for him.

Can you imagine how much weigth Charlie will put on if he's confined to a barkalounger for several months? Thank Ganesha the injury happened at the beginning of the season.
