Fired Willingham told to continue recruiting
Washington football coach Tyrone Willingham has said since being let go that he was waiting for a directive from the school on how to proceed in recruiting. That came this week as athletic director Scott Woodward told Willingham and the rest of the coaching staff to carry on as close to normal as possible. To that end, Woodward said letters went out this week to all players who have committed to UW, as well as those who had received offers, that those promises will be honored. Washington has five known commitments, several from players who have said in recent weeks they are wavering. Scout.com lists 28 players with offers. Woodward said the school will make no new offers until a new coaching staff is in place. But he wants the current staff to continue to recruit the players who do have offers.

What? Why? Ty: Billy 3 Star you should come too the UW. Billy: Who is goining to be the next coach? Ty: Not Sure. Billy: Well, what kind of O/D scheme is going to be run? Ty: Dunno. Billy: How long will it take to rebuild the program? Ty: Don't Care. Billy: No thanks.

Where are you Michael Wilbon...? Mark May...? No comments on the blatant racism demonstrated by this university on firing their coach after three plus seasons...? You're nothing but hypocrites you phonies...

How can you call it racism? He's 11-32 in his 3+ seasons at Washington, and 76-84-1 for his career. Willingham is just not HC material, nothing wrong with that. But, what your saying is they should just continue to lose instead of firing him because he's an African American. I hate when people try to replace incompetence with racism.

Are you making a sarcastic comment directed at Wilbon and May? As I think WU was WAY too patient with a less than capable coach.

I am just wondering why Notre Dame and Washington are being held to a different standard for the same action with the same coach who was in over his head at both programs...

Ok, thanks for the clarification. So you agree that Willingham was being used as a martyr by the likes of Wilbon?

I think it was a joke (sort of) but not really!
The deal is (it felt like everyone) jumped all over Notre Dame for firing Ty after 3 years. Now it's ok for UW to let him go after 4 years?
ND knew he wasn't HC material.
Now Charlie better get it right, or the door will hit him in the **** on the way out!

Why is it that everytime Willingham gets fired it's racism? The guy hasn't produced anything close to success since his first season at ND. Pull your head out. And don't even insinuate that Wilbon or May give 2 @#%& about this either. Not all African-Americans in sports think like you. In fact very few of them do.

Asking Ty Willingham to keep on recruiting when everyone knows he is fired is like the school or NFL team, forget which one, who had the fired guy in charge of hiring his replacement.

He couldn't recruit at ND, and he obviously wasn't too successful recruiting at Washington.
He'll leave his successor with the same mediocre talent that he left Weis with at ND--a few solid performers like Brady Quinn, and a lot of also-rans.
Any school firing a coach has to anticipate the recruiting impact, and either wait until the season is over and quickly appoint a successor, or have a successor named when the firing takes place mid-season. No matter what, it's messy, but Washington appears to have been unprepared for this issue when it decided to fire Ty.

The Truth nailed it! Wilbon and May have been silent on Washington thru this whole mess, they couldn't wait to nail ND at every opportunity and play the race card. Ty didn't do anything to dispel the allegations either, I lost a lot of respect for the guy when he refused to say anything.
You want to know why Ty got fired from ND and Washington? The article says that Washington has FIVE KNOWN RECRUITS. That's right, FIVE. Most other teams have at least a dozen if not more, he is a terrible recruiter and a destroyer of good programs!

Miyagi and Gariboy--the major difference is that ND even let JERRY FAUST finish out his contract. In the history of the school, they made one exception--and that exception just so happens to be black. That's the difference. Washington honored his contract--nothing needs to be said. BTW--last time I checked, he did a bang up job at Stanford--which is a tough sell because of high academics. I just think it's funny how some people who post on the site have zero experience with sports on the coaching side, and how they know everything. Some of these people couldn't recruit a hooker in a red-light district with $5,000.

Sometimes there is racism involved; there are also times when the coach, who just happens to be black, doesn't get the job done (as Ty didn't at Washington, and to an extent at ND) and they need to get canned. I guess simpletons give simplistic views. White or black, some coaches get in that 'lame duck' situation when their contract isn't renewed a year or two before it expires--other coaches exploit that situation. Coaching is a very complex job.

You are making "simplistic" comments on his ND situation without the benefit of facts. It is a fact that Ty reached out to Washington about their vacant coaching position prior to being shown the door at ND. ND also honored his ENTIRE contract financially meaning he was still being paid by ND while coaching at WU. He left ND a VERY rich man. All he had to do was "man up" to those two boneheads (Wilbon and May) when they were trying to stir up the racism card and simply state the racism was not a factor in his dismissal at ND and the whole thing would have blown over. He chose not to. Now it is evident that it was his coaching that got him canned at ND and WU.

Also, to say that he is the first coach at ND that was not allowed to finish his contract is equally pointless. College football has changed a great deal over the years. It is about MONEY. The only color ND sees is "green" and if Weis doesn't get them big payouts on New Year's Day in the next few years he will be shown the door far before his 10 years are up.

This is not a rumor. Tyrone is supposed to sell current offers/commits on the tradition, resources, etc and just maintain that line until a real coach is in place.

Agree about coaching being so much more than just gametime. There are the politics, boosters, marketing, endorsement, and recruiting. Be that as it may, Willingham should try for something like Stanford as he had done little since then.
