Peavy to Braves or Cubs

Jake Peavy is going to be a Brave or Cub in the next few weeks. Padre GM Kevin Towers said yesterday, "The train has left the station." Translation: There is no doubt his ace will be traded. Towers said he had moved far enough along in trade conversations during the just-completed GM meetings to be confident that Peavy will be dealt before the Dec. 8-11 Winter meetings in Las Vegas. The Braves remain the front-runner for Peavy. However, the Cubs are trying to obtain Peavy and re-sign Ryan Dempster. That would enable them to form a dynamic rotation, with that duo plus Rich Harden, Ted Lilly and Carlos Zambrano. The Dodgers also have weighed in on Peavy. But the Padres would expect a greater return on Peavy from a division competitor, and the Dodgers seem more focused on either retaining Derek Lowe or chasing CC Sabathia than trading for Peavy.

peavy will probably end up as a braves...hope they could talk out the trade..

He isn't going to go to the Cubs, what do they have to offer in retrun?

November 7, 2008  07:22 AM ET

Wasn't there just a blurb on here yesterday saying he isn't likely going to the Braves because the Padres want Hanson and the Braves aren't willing to part with him? Maybe they worked something else out. All I know is I'm already sick of this drama...

I think your going to see Peavy as a Brave very soon, good for him as an Alabama boy getting closer to home. The Braves can pull of this trade with a package of Yunel Escobar, Jo-Jo Reyes and a prospect not named Tommy Hanson. The Cubs do have a package they could center around Pie and Zamarsjia, but he has a no trade clause. Regardless, I think that the Braves have the definate "want" in this trade, with an aging (not to mention injury prone) rotation and the uncertainty of Smoltz returning as a starter or a reliever again. Welcome to Atlanta, Mr. Peavy...

Not so fast. He isn't in Atlanta yet. Although I hope he is soon, but it is too early to say he will be a Brave.

Laughs..and who are the coming going to trade for him? See it to believe it.some say "Pie and Zamarsjia"............now i know this rumor is not going to happen............ ANd where did you get this BS tip of a trade from DRF?

Excellent questions all, the most compelling being, who ARE the coming going to trade for him?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going down to the cafeteria for some pie and Zamarsjia.

I also heard that Khalil Greene might be included a Peavy package to the Braves. From what I hear, Khalil is a better hitter outside of Petco Park, and Turner field just might be the change of venue that he needs. He would be an 'OK' replacement for Escobar if Escobar is traded along with any other prospects, none of which are named Hanson, to the Padres.

November 7, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Why would you go to the Braves and not a contender?

November 7, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Zamarsjia? I'm Zamarsjia intolerant

Yet still, you make such a delicate and tasty Zamarsjiapan. I'm impressed.

The Cubs could offer a package around Felix Pie and Zamardjia. They could get the deal done but I think Peavy is practically a Brave anyway.

Why would he want the Braves? No offense to them but they are a team in need of rebuilding. They arent going to be hitting the playoffs anytime soon. The Cubs have a legit chance at the playoffs again. Nothing against the Braves, but if Peavy has a say in it, Id think he'd pick the winner of the 2.

Its a labor of love really. I'm also intolerant of complete trogloditic morons, but you will find me giving some attention to that tool that apes Slinky.

Get it done and then go after Derek Lowe. That would be two pieces of the "rebuilding" that everyone is on here harping about - which puzzles me. If everyone just goes to play for contenders, how exactly is anyone supposed to rebuild? It's very rare that a team builds a winning team strickly from their farm system anymore.

I also find it funny that everyone just discounts the Braves...as if the 90's meant nothing. Granted they are not the same club over the past few years, but I'm thinking that between the farm system and the veterans that Wren is working to secure, they could have a look at the wild card. I bet that the Braves finish better than the Cubs next year.

November 7, 2008  10:32 AM ET

I dont see him becoming a Brave or a Cub. 1st off... Peavy wants his contract to be restructured similar to that of Johan Santana which the Braves can not afford. The Cubs can, but dont think they have the quality talent to offer. I know I am a die hard Yankee... but Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Austin Jackson is enough talent, and the Yankees have the cash to give him 5 years $100 mill.

November 7, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Didn't the Braves already say they are not trading away prospects for Peavy?

November 7, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Yes... Braves already said Yunel Escobar and Tommy Hanson are "untouchable"

November 7, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Peavy would reject a trade to the Yankees or practically any other American League team. He has made it pretty clear he does not want to go to the Amercian League. As far as going to a winner of the two between braves and Cubs, last I checked the Cubs havent won anything in over 100 years. The Braves are "rebuilding" but Peavy would be a huge step toward the playoffs.
