Cubs dilemma: Peavy or Roberts
As the Cubs step up their pursuit of San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy, they might be playing themselves out of the bidding for one of their top offseason priorities, Baltimore Orioles leadoff hitter Brian Roberts. Sources say the Padres are seeking a three-for-one or four-for-one swap for Peavy, getting a package of young talent that is expected to include at least one major-league-ready pitcher. That could cost the Cubs some of their best trading chips in their pursuit of Roberts.

whose #'s are declining vs a 27 year old front end starter

In a word: cost.
Also, Roberts' '08 numbers were better than his '07 numbers which were better than his '06 numbers. I'm not suggesting that, given the choice, I'd rather have Robert's over Peavy, but his numbers are not declining.

If you break it down between Roberts and Peavy, definitely go after Peavy...
That still doesn't solve the Cubs desperate need of a left-handed heavy hitter. But there are far better out there to go after than Roberts.

Another year, another Roberts to the Cubs rumor. What is it like 3 years in a row now? Roberts would be a nice pick up for them. He's a speedy, solid hitter and good with the glove. Most important, like SlinkyRedfoot said, Cost. Peavy, if he wants to renegotiate his contract, will want Santana money. Roberts would allow them the flexability to resign Dempster, and go after another mid level outfielder. Peavy would be a luxury. Roberts is the more pressing need for the Cubs at this point. But, I expect to see another Roberts to the Cubs rumor next year, this one never dies!
