Gary Carter to manage NY team

Gary Carter will manage in New York next season. It just will not be the job he lobbied for earlier this year. Carter, a Hall of Famer and former Met, will manage the minor league Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He publicly lobbied to replace Willie Randolph as the Mets' manager last season while Randolph still had the job. The Mets eventually replaced Randolph with Jerry Manuel. The Mets offered him the Class AA Binghamton job the next season, but he turned it down. He said in June that a Hall of Famer should not have to go to Class AA to prove himself.

great player, kind of a tool now......

"He publicly lobbied to replace Willie Randolph as the Mets' manager last season while Randolph still had the job"

you just don't do that.
It shows you his true character- NOT what you want from a manager

carter is a sports dingleberry

He said in June that a Hall of Famer should not have to go to Class AA to prove himself.

Eh, a good player does not necessarily make a good manager. Wasn't there a post about that yesterday on one of the boards somewhere?

And Sox Sider is right - Carter IS a dingleberry. That's probably the cleanest word I can think of that would slide past the mods...

Please God, not my Ducks.

I'm thinking this idiot reminds me of another big-mouth, former star, **** who always gets a free pass from Americans - Schilling.

I should have just copied this comment in the first place.

Bud Harrelson offering a hand-out to a former Met who went into the Hall as an Expo.

Maybe he should hit up the Nats for a jobby job?

It's getting easier to get into the Hall of Fame. Most of the guys inducted recently don't belong. Guess what Gary? You shouldn't be there.

November 8, 2008  12:57 PM ET

He's correct. He should have to go to A ball like Sandberg did.

November 8, 2008  01:06 PM ET

What a jerk. Feel sorry for the Long Island Ducks.

November 8, 2008  05:45 PM ET

A Hall of Famer shouldn't have to prove themselves as manager, as long as they are in the Hall as a manager. Players need to prove their managing skills whether they are HOF or not.

What a dick this guy is!

November 8, 2008  06:05 PM ET

Wow, it made it through the filters. Does it only work on Gary Carter threads?

November 8, 2008  07:37 PM ET

I'm not sure why they need Carter....certainly not for the publicity, it's tough to get a seat at EAB field where they play. It's a 6,000 seat gem of a place and they get almost a half million a year in attendance.

Yes, there's something in the terms of use that allow you to use the word **** Gary Carter-related threads.

You can say dick, you just can't say "****." For obvious, grossedout reasons.

My goodness, why all the hate for Gary Carter? Everyone knows Willie Randolph is a royal moron and Carter just wanted to say he was interested and available. It was very professional of him, but come on folks, Randolph was a cancer. Carter is full of class. Stop the bashing folks and wake up and realize he is a good man.

Oops, I meant unprofessional.
