I'm told that Cuban defector Reinier Alcantara will begin workouts with Chivas USA next week. He previously had trained with Kansas City.

I guess he's had enough of Castro's workers paradise. Couldn't handle all that prosperity so, he risked his life and defected. Good for him! I like a guy who has brass cohones to do something like that. But, did anyone tell him that our new president is promising what Castro did so long ago? He might want to defect to Canada next! :-)

Anyway (as I ignore the end of the 1st comment...no offense DCruiser we just have a difference in opinion) if this guy is good enough sign him.

Simple.

It's not my opinion. It was intended as a joke, hence the smily face. My bad. I guess not many are able to tell the difference between "joke" and "opinion."

Throw us a bone here , T&R!

Who is this guy? Could you be a bit more specific than "Cuban defector"?

What does he play? Why didn't KC sign him? Is there a Maykael Galindo connection?

I don't know about risking his life, he probably just left the team when they were over playing the US last month. Cuba routinely loses players to defection when they play in Canada or the USA, its not like most people who try to cross over on rafts. Wonderful people though, gorgeous island to visit.

Not much info on him. He's 27, a forward with the Cuban National Team. He must be some good to be selected to represent his country. They came to Washington to play the US on Oct. 11 for a World Cup Qualifier. He used the opportunity to get away. In spite of tight security (they always take away all their documents), disconnecting all the phones from their rooms and keeping a close watch, he managed to escape. I guess it beats swimming with the sharks on a makeshift raft!

Welcome to America, Reinier! With a name like that, he should be playing for Seattle!

Why would he want to come to such a mean and oppressive country like ours? Isn't that what I keep hearing? And according to Michael Moore, the medical system in Cuba is top notch, TOP NOTCH! If he doesn't fit the criteria, we should send him back, just Elian Gonzalez, if need be, we can have Janet Reno do it!

And ..... when is Michael Moore going to move to that Cuban paradise he so fondly describes? Besides being a shameless pig and a first rate hypocrite, he's a traitor! Put him on a raft and send him there!

Send him back, with the economy the way it is right now, he should go back!

The Cuban community is large in the states and they help one another, if he doesn't make it as a pro player he'll end up washing dishes, making small 'deliveries' on South Beach, running a disco club and ultimately a few back and forth trips to Bolivia on behalf of MLS/Barca. Before flaming out in his own mansion.

If you don't get it, don't be offended.

Reinier-Alcantara is a 26 year old Centre forward for the Cuban National team. He as played professional soccer at the age of 15 when he was signed by F.C. Pinar Del Rio in Cuba. He has appeared as Under 17, Olympic team, under 23 and in 2005 appeared for the National team squad as a strating striker. He was the 2nd top scorer in Digical Cup and has caped more than 90 national games with 50 goals under his belt. His goal against Mexico's national team was the first look at what this player is capable of and is regarded as a great loss to the Cuban Football association when he defected the team before a game in RFK Stadium against the US. He is considered to be the best striker cuba has turned out in years.
