Peavy to Braves, Cubs or Dodgers

Padres general manager Kevin Towers was back home in San Diego on Friday, sifting through the possibilities that will allow him to trade former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the Cubs, the Atlanta Braves or -- in a long-shot deal -- the Los Angeles Dodgers. A resolution is expected within the next week. Those teams are the finalists and, sources say, no other teams will be considered at this point. That throws out the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and New York Yankees -- unless an unexpected hurdle pops up.

As a Phillies fan, I hope he goes to LA. What do the Cubs have to offer? I mean hell if they want Tommy Hansen + from the Braves, there's no talent near that waiting in the wings of the Cubbies organization.

"Peavy to Cubs, Braves or Dodgers....." OH MY!! Timing, Location, and Money as always.

OR someone throws a boatload of $$$ & prospects

- As a Yankee fan- I'd love Peavy- but there is no reason
to wipe out our farm for him when there are alternatives
on the free agent market- where all you lose is $$$

Agreed.

I just don't see the point with all these NL team threads. They are obviously the weaker division and are pathetically hopeless against the unstoppable AL.

November 9, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I meant weaker league, of course. I think I've been spending too much time around NL teams. It affects your ability to think straight. I should be hanging out with AL teams, it makes you smarter and makes your skin look twenty years younger.

Hasn't this been on here, off and on, as a T&R for the last two weeks or s, now? There is no other baseball news t oreplce this T&R?
okay then I will start some T&Rs of my own:
1) Mets to consider Pettitte as an option for the back end of their rotation? He has experience pitching in the NL, the NL is designed for someone of his ilk and he has experience pitching in NY.
2) Yankees considering trading Kennedy, Wright and Cano for Holliday and Spilborghs of the Colroado Rockies.
3) Tigers consider trading Magglio Ordonez to the Angels for Mike Napoli (C)and Hank Conger (C), Brandon Wood (SS/3B), Nick Alenhart (P) and Jose Arredondo (P).
4) Rockies want to send third baseman Garrett Atkins to Minnesota for outfielder Michael Cuddyer

Agreed, the Phillies got "lucky". I see 'em gettin' "lucky" for the next 2-3 years.

Yes, well except that Philly is finally in the threads (Chasin's says "muck fanny" under his breath) so I like some of them. Was T&R #2 of yours something you wanted to see come to fruition?

November 9, 2008  10:36 AM ET

However, If the Yanks could get Orlando Hundson, then I would do the Rockies trade. Rockies need a second baseman and pitching. Spilborghs is supposed to be the real deal in center. And I read about the Pettitte idea in the local paper here (CT) this morning and, actually, it might not be a bad idea for the Mets. The Tiger trade is a pure fabrication on my part but doable, I think. And I stole the Rockies/Twins trade from the rumor line. :)

I know I'm a hopeless Padres fan who desperately wants Peavy to stay of course, but I'm saying still nothing happens this winter and Jake is the starter on opening day in a San Diego uniform. Kevin Towers will not give him up for anything less than what he and the Padres consider the better end of the deal (Just look at Towers' history of dealing with other teams - i.e. Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young from Texas). This (I hope) is all much ado about nothing.
Now of course if the Padres are well below .500 come late June, then I will come to accept Peavy being traded at the deadline. So what I must acknowledge I assume is sooner or later Peavy not being a Padre. Hey Towers, can we at least keep (and give one more chance to) Khalil Greene?

So, to answer your question Chase, the second one: it was mine and I would like to see it come to fruition.

Well, being that I am partial to number 4, JC, I will start with that one as your T&R posts are far more interesting at this point then the rehashed Peavy drama. As a Twins fan, but an objective baseball fan, I think the trade makes sense for both sides and this deal should get done this off season. Minnesota is in desperate need of a hitting 3rd baseman (even if the stats for Atkins drastically decline away from Coors), and with Holliday more than likely on the move they will have a spot open in the outfield to throw in Cuddyer. I think with Coors still being Coors, Cuddyer could be a decent RBI man and though not an even replacement for Holliday, certainly a more than capable outfielder. The contracts don't match that well, but Cuddy is still reasonably priced, especially being signed through 2010. Cuddy isnt as much of a fan favorite as some would like to believe, and with all the young talent in the Twins outfield it makes more sence to trade a guy like Cuddyer with a far less upside than Delmon Young, Gomez or Denard Span. Atkins would thrive in a place like Minnesota too. The short fences in the Homer Dome would more than likely boost his power numbers and the Pitching in the AL central is (I would say) worse than that of the NL West now that CC is gone. Unfortunately, I think that the deal isnt going to get done without some sort of prospect pitcher and and I am not sure whether or not that tips the scale too far to the Rockies. Depending on the demand for Atkins, the Twins may be better off signing a free agent like Casey Blake or Joe Crede as a stopgap. However, as I have stated earlier, I think that this deal gets done, based on mutual interest and the needs of both teams, it may just be the right package hasnt gotten put together. Billy Smith has already proven his is willing to deal (See: Delmon Young trade).

This year the National League had a lower ERA, beat out the American league in all the major offensive categories, only lost the All Star Game by one run in the late innings, and won the World Series.

But last year the American League was pretty good so I guess you're right.

well all right now... see, that's what I am talking about. Now that was a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out post. In all seriousness, it was.
