Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has reportedly admitted he would like to play in America at some point. Indeed Silvestre insists that he would want to impress in the States and not just make up the numbers. He concluded: "But I don't just want to go over to the States and wear the shirt -- I want to keep playing and do well in America."

He's said this before. He also said he would come at 35. If not mistaken he's only 30 so this is some years off.

Just priming the market I guess. Maybe some one would say hey! we would have given you $1M/yr @ 35 come over at 33 and we will give you $1.5M/yr. Smart.

No, thanks. I'd rather see that money spent on younger talent, rather than a guy who couldn't get time at United or still can't get much time at Arsenal. If he's willing to come over now, sure. At 35, would that be a step in the right direction for MLS, or in the wrong direction for MLS? I think the answer is obvious.

These pathetic rumors have to end. It's always "HENRY TO MLS!!!!!" Then getting to the story it's "....possibly. And at least not for 7 years."

Ok we get it everyone in the world may possibly come to MLS someday. Now how about some rumors that are actually interesting?

November 9, 2008  06:17 PM ET

Spam X1...........here's the deal. EVERY Euro player should come to the U.S. to play at least once in their career. My reasoning? To show the Americans how many decades they are behind in quality of play.

November 9, 2008  06:43 PM ET

you know, they could at least get a pic of him in a gunners jersey

November 9, 2008  06:52 PM ET

I just don't see MLS paying so much money to a defender.

November 9, 2008  07:06 PM ET

I guess Mikael doesn't read the paper ...Beckham took all the money and left for Milan was it ? ...He will be the new poster boy for the city of fashion ....

So unless you want to play for chump change stay away....

November 9, 2008  10:21 PM ET

Silvestre is no where near the calibre of player MLS should be attracting. As a red he was one of my least favorite players and selling him to Arsenal was the riddance of dead weight. He isn't a bad player per se, it's just that he simply doesn't have the fire or God given talent to make it past a sub spot AT BEST. Even if he did jump across the pond he would play maybe half a season before some phantom injury saw the $750,000+ spent on him (I hardly see anyone paying more than a million for him) go straight into the gutter.

November 9, 2008  11:58 PM ET

ehh , i dont know what to say , he's been out of form for a few seasons now , why not try the MLS now before your talents slowly diminish?

November 10, 2008  08:50 AM ET

When they say, "I'd like to play in America at some POINT", that's a clear indication of their retirement plans.

November 10, 2008  09:18 AM ET

He is maybe not one of the top defender in Europe, but honestly, find me one guy who is at least as good as him in MLS.

This guy has 9 years of experience in the best club in the world and played in the CL and at the international stage.

I do think that right now he has the potential to be one of the best player in MLS if he wants to come here quickly. But most importantly, he has the experience ! How many players can bring his knowledge of a high level in competition in MLS right now ?

The players here need to gain this experience of the big games.

November 10, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Well, I do think that parkhurst is pretty good, and Jimmy Conrad has had some pretty decent games in the past--but I can't really say that they are "better" than Silvestre because i have hardly seen him play in the last number of years...

I do agree that he shouldn't fetch too many big dollars, and if he does come to the MLS, it needs to be soon, before he loses any more speed or form. I think all these guys don't know how physical the MLS is, and don't think about the artifical turf stadiums that wreak havoc on old knees. Beckham HATED the art-turf. Totally killed his free-kick-up-and-over-swerve because he couldn't get under the ball enough on certain kicks. Reyna HATED the fake-turf as well. Claims it battered his knees into early submission.

d-wreck- while i like conrad and parkhurst (when he's not wearing the Rev's jersey), i would gladly take Baky and Sega any day of the week....

im getting bored with these "rumors"... i would much rather the teams go to the s.american leagues and pick up some struggling youth and see them try their luck in the States.... im getting tired of all the rumored older players planning a stop in the MLS before hanging up their boots....its clear that they see it as a retiring league, and have no interest in furthing the sport itself....

November 10, 2008  03:05 PM ET

At some point? Your 31!

He used to be a top defender, at center or left back. But then United signed Vidic, he got injured, things went downhill. But he can ceratinly raise the level of play here somewhat. I would love to see him here, say in a couple of years at the most.

As long as they don't spend DP cash on him... (Which will probably end up happening, unfortunatley)

November 10, 2008  03:15 PM ET

i doubt he'll even fathom a move if he's not making DP money....

November 10, 2008  03:16 PM ET

and no team will drop a DP slot on a defender.... we simply dont have that quality of forwards that we need big name defenders.... the fire are fine, so i dont have to worry about them dropping any $$ on a high priced defender...

watch LA make the bid LOL

November 10, 2008  10:29 PM ET

I'm calling it...LA gets Silvestre and wait for it - they bring back Abel Xavier!!
Talk about a fearsome combination in the central defense!!!

I would prepay now for the MLS Direct Kick package to see those stumbling, rumbling defenders!

Yes yes, I would agree, they've been very good as well this year when i got a chance to catch a game...
