Can Miles fix LSU's quarterback problem?

The story of this Alabama-LSU game was a 19-year-old freshman in whose hands Les Miles has placed his immediate future, a kid who helped win the game for Alabama after he played a leading role in helping the Tigers lose to Florida and Georgia. "I kept trying to make plays, make things happen, when the plays weren't there, " said somber Jarrett Lee, as he rocked back and forth, his back to the wall, in his purple windbreaker. Why is Lee "out there?" Because Miles, the decider, feels he has no one better. He's probably correct. So how could the Tigers get in such a trick box? Now you're hearing the story it all goes back to signing Ryan Perrilloux, who committed to Texas before casting his lot with LSU, a decision that prompted Colt McCoy to pass up LSU for Texas. Who knows? For now, it appears the Lee era is here, although Tigers fans might soon be getting an extended look at freshman Jordan Jefferson, who has a stronger arm than Lee and is more athletic.

Jarrett Lee just didn't look good yesterday. Jefferson should have gotten the opportunity to get into that game to see if he could make some plays.

Hopefully, Jefferson and incoming super-prep Russell Shepherd will push Lee in spring training to the bench. Lee has regressed woefully this season, thrown a record 6 pick-sixes and is as unpopular a player at LSU as I've ever seen. It's so bad that the admins over at Tigerdroppings.com, the super LSU fan site, have started kicking fans off the site for being a bit too vociferous in their rantings about Lee. Too bad, but truth is, Lee is 95% of the reason LSU lost last night and to Georgia.

November 9, 2008  12:25 PM ET

True enough. I feel bad for the way he's getting burned out on the field and with the fans.
I'm more dissappointed in the fans. No realism there. Jeezis, he's a freshman. He will make mistakes. Mistakes I want to projectile vomit across the room, no doubt, but he needs time.
Methinks he's gonna let the burn get into his head and we have witnessed the beginning of the end for him.

While I am thrilled Alabama won last night.... I must admit that it was about as sloppy a game I have ever seen Bama and LSU play...

Neither team looked very good... thankfully Alabama found a way to win...

The problem of course is that when Bama meets Florida in the SEC Championship game, Florida is going to run all over us unless we find a way to be far more consistent in the passing game.

Good luck the rest of the year LSU...

This sure is a huge dropoff from Matt's play last year. Matt was way cuter, too.

Les shouldn't get a pass here, though. That sure was a boneheaded play to call when you've got a shaky QB and you've got the ball first in OT. Easy pick and you come away without any points.

November 9, 2008  01:34 PM ET

The real defining moment for Lee was when he had a 3rd down play in the 3rd quarter and ran wide right on an out pass play, but the Bama defense had opened up a HUGE hole for him to run through. Lee could have EASILY ran for a first down, but he didn't have the instinct to take advantage of the silver plated opening and instead, stopped and tossed the ball in the kinda, sorta general vicinity of his receiver, which was, as many of his passes were, not even close.

That deer caught in a headlight look will not win games. If he's afraid to run the ball when an opening as large as Moses parting the Red Sea opens up in front of him, then he is not the one to lead LSU to the promised land.

November 9, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Of course Les can fix this....

...its called recruiting!! Recruit, Recruit, & then Recruit some more!!!

November 9, 2008  02:48 PM ET

The kid is 19 YEARS OLD IDIOTS! Trust me, I am GLAD we won yesterday, BUT it is so WRONG of LSU and the freakin state of Loser-ana to put so much pressure on the guy! Way to build his confidence, Less! HE DID NOT WIN THE GAME FOR BAMA! Mind you, LSU's defense scored off our offense as well. The score would have been much worse had we not fumbled at the end zone and missed 2 field goals!

By the way... ****??? I am curious to see if the NCAA penalizes LSU for BURNING AN EFFIGY OF SABAN at the bon fire. What a tasteless, classless, barbaric, and provocative activity. LSU has become a first in the NCAA! The first and hopefully LAST team to BEST RESEMBLE IRANIANS. Granted Bama is your "biggest" rival (thank you for viewing us like that, but I can assure you, LSU is not viewed the same way, even after 5 years in a row. LSU is more of an irritation than a RIVAL. AUBURN is a rival, TENNESSEE is a rival, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, Miss State.. THOSE are rivals for one reason or another... mainly because they are boarder states. But there is a real reason why we at Bama refer to LSU as Loser-ana State... we beat LSU at THEIR OWN HOME STADIUM for ...... 30 CONSECUTIVE YEARS!!! 30!!!! 3-0!!!!!! So NO, you are not a rival to us.) but what LSU did was a nice slap-in-the-face at a school who was there for you after Katrina and Gustav. It is ok to trash talk, poke fun at, or even use good ole southern Black Majic against us, but to burn an effigy of someone is WAY TOO FAR and the NCAA needs to seriously reprimand LSU if the university does not address the issue itself. Such activities can incite violence.

November 9, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Hey, BamaBrat (fitting handle by the way), "LSU" didn't burn an effigy of Saban. According to the TV broadcast, it was a condom company doing it to attract attention to sell condoms. It wasn't on university property either. I wish they would have said which one, because as an LSU fan I agree with you that it was offensive.

November 9, 2008  03:40 PM ET

Bamagrat96 - The burning of Saban act was a promotional stunt put on by a local developer trying to promote some condos he was building and was NOT endorsed by the LSU administration. Since such an act would more likely fall under the banner of freedom of speech than hate crimes, it is neither the right nor the responsibility of the university to stop it. If you want to fault anyone, then let it be the media. If it doesn't get televised then only the 200 or so people there would have been aware of it.

LSU fans should take a hard look at their play calling, not their quarterback. 'Bama went through the same issues last year when Wilson was asked to make high risk / high reward throws called by Major Applewhite, usually with high-priced consequences. We quietly "allowed" our coordinator to return to Texas as an assistant (NOT a coordinator you may have noticed) and got a better one. That type of playcalling only works if you have markedly superior talent or a REALLY good VETERAN quarterback.

Sorry DavidN - I was typing as you were posting the same response!

November 9, 2008  04:00 PM ET

LSU just needs to schedule more ncf creampuffs to keep their won/loss record up. I don't know if 4 this year is enough.... Oh wait... they're MAXED OUT! All their other opponents are in conf... Oh well. forget that idea....

I stand corrected. Thank you. (roll tide!)

100% correct. He couldn't have been any worse than Lee.

November 10, 2008  07:34 AM ET

You can't win all games, every year. Our QB is new and it takes time. So all the people venting venom at Lee, give him a break. He is just 19 and he's probably feeling a lot worse than we feel. He will be good and next year we will do great. Moreover, the defense played really good, so give them some credit.

November 10, 2008  08:40 AM ET

I fault the coaches for putting him in that position. He obviously can't make all the throws. You're at home, in OT, ball first, great defense, shaky freshman QB. PLAY IT SAFE AND GET POINTS. I know Les is a gambler, but you don't gamble with a 19 year old freshman against the #1 team.

November 10, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Russell Shepard!!! Russell Shepard!!! Russell Shepard!!!, Well, I just hope Russell isn't thrown into the fire next year, and burned... Yeah, Lee is young blah blah blah, I just want to slap Perrilloux, and start crying like a lil school girl. Maybe things would of been different if we still had RP. Lee, I thought you was going to be the General ( General Lee ), but I would transfer if I was you.

November 10, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Hunh, a couple of thoughts:

1. If there's any dissapointment on my part, it's because I let myself think that "The Hat" had another rabbit to pull out, and after the Auburn game it looked like he did. Now we know that the truth before the season started is the truth now - despite being loaded on both lines, this is a rebuilding year for LSU, and they're playing like everyone expected.

2. Lee, if anything, should be congratulated on being resilient enough to continue playing despite all his hardships. He should have had another year (with Hatch and Jordan) to learn the system. The last two QB's who lead LSU to the NC were SENIORS who played behind good QB's (Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn). The kid was in HS two years ago, now he's #1 QB on a national championship team. Believe me, it could have been much, much worse.

3. Another Lee thought: Anybody remember how well (that's a joke) JP Wilson and Matt Stafford did their first years? How about Jamarcus Russell? All three teams stuck with their young QB's through the bad times, and were amply rewarded later. Lee may not make the best choices now, what with all the pick-sixes he's thrown. But he's also shown maturity, leadership, a good arm, and physical toughness. Given his natural (if raw) talent, does anyone doubt that he'll be a good (great?) QB in the years to come if he's coached up properly?

4. Despite being an LSU homer, I think it'll be Bama and Florida in the SEC championship game; if there's no major injuries to the winning team during that game (ala Tyrone Prothro-type injury), then I think I'll be rooting for yet ANOTHER SEC team in the NC game in January. I bleed Purple and Gold, but on that day I'll be screaming for Bama or the Gators. No matter how good any Big-12 team may be on offense, I'll stack up an SEC defense against them any day. My bet is that the SEC rules for a third year, which is good enough for me at this point (hey, LSU can't be NC champ EVERY year, can they?)

5. My worrisome thought for the future: If Ryan had not gotten kicked off the team, this was LSU's best chance for a repeat NC anytime in the near future. They are stacked on both lines, but most of them are seniors (or juniors that will be draft eligible). Even if Lee - or Jefferson - get really good next year, I worry that they may be out of synch (again) with younger players on the line. Unless a lot of the draft-eligible juniors elect to stay another year (like Dorsey did), I think it may be two years before LSU is truly competitive again. I hope I'm wrong, because so many good juniors only have one more year to play. But unless The Hat can pull some magic QB growth dust out of his hat this summer, I think next year will be much like this year; good, not great; competitive, but not dominant.

But I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think benching Lee is the answer. He's a freshman who was thrown into the fire because "the future" got kicked off the team. Miles will get the problem fixed, but the kid needed more time to develop and didn't get it.
