Vols still looking for quarterback

Tennessee's dysfunctional offense hit a new low against Wyoming on Saturday because, in part, of the same old problem -- poor quarterbacking. Consequently, the Vols enter a bye week with the position unsettled. Nick Stephens has started five straight games but yielded to Jonathan Crompton in the second quarter after throwing his second interception. Crompton, UT's No. 1 quarterback in the first four games of the season, played better than Stephens ??? but not very well. He completed 11 of 27 passes for just 91 yards and often appeared unsure of where to throw the ball. After the 13-7 loss to Wyoming, UT Coach Phillip Fulmer hinted that third-teamer B.J. Coleman might get a harder look during the open date.

Does it matter if he looks at Coleman? There's two games left, and he won't be coaching him after that.

Good point Spaceman. This season is lost. Play them all at this point and hire a new coach as soon as the final whistle blows on this season.

The difference for many notable programs this year is a lack of good consistent quarterback play. Tennessee & Michigan a just two of those whose play on the field is poor beginning with the QB position. A good team can cover up poor play at most positions...just not at quarterback!!

Wyoming???

I get that UT has a QB problem...but Wyoming? They shouldn't have scored at all against an SEC defense.

November 9, 2008  03:18 PM ET

SEC defense?? IT was the offense that gave a pick 6 and an INT return to the 4, this had nothing to do with the defense.

Can they just fire Clawson and send his awful system back to the FCS where it belongs. This is the worst offense UT has ever had and its safe to say its the OC's fault. BBall season cannot come fast enough

Oh, I get your point. My bad.

November 9, 2008  11:29 PM ET

Maybe they could get a walk-on out of the stands like TX Tech with their kicker

And .... how does a team like Tennessee not have great QB's 2 or 3 deep?

The chickens have come home to roost fat boy, keep crying. You spent too much time chatting with the NCAA about Alabama and not enough time trying to figure out how to stop the Gators. And don't get me started about his BS "we did it clean" crap. There is so much NCAA smoke billowing around UcheaT, it makes knoxville look like a sugar cane field. I wish he hadn't quit. I was enjoying that pained look on his round face.

Tennessee's football team does not lack talent, and more than one of their quarterbacks is capable of performing well at this level of competition. So, how does Crompton play so well off the bench in the 2007 SEC Championship game, look like a cool-headed pro in practice, then collapse during game situations in 2008? Coaching.

Cutcliffe is not just a brilliant offensive schemer, he's terrific at developing quarterbacks and inspiring them to their best performances. Both Peyton and Eli Manning were tutored by David Cutcliffe. When Cutcliffe left for Ole Miss, the Vols offense sputtered under Randy Sanders (check the QB stats as well). Cutcliffe returned, and the Vols were playing in the SEC Championship game that year.

When Cutcliffe left for Duke, Fulmer hired Clawson. Clawson may have had a rep for developing QBs, but he's fallen flat following in Cutcliffe's footsteps. Crompton has been a head case during 2008 games. Similarly, Stephens performance belies a lack of preparation, not a lack of talent. When the students fail to play to their potential, the buck stops with the coaches.

The buck stopped with Phil Fulmer. With Chavis and Cutcliffe, Fulmer led the Tennessee program to great successes. Bereft of Cutcliffe, Fulmer has failed to recruit and hire an OC that can keep the Vols offense performing to its potential. Clearly, the University has taken this into account in its decision to remove Fulmer as head coach after this season.

For once, I`m gonna agree with a Gator fan. If you accuse others of cheating just to hide what you`re doing, You are pond scum. I also remember the Tee martin thing. It got swept under the rug real quick. Fat boy, what comes around goes around.

it will be interesting to see what their new coach will be to do with the talent they have on hand.

You can hang up that recruiting class. They are already backing out and Spurrier isn't going to UcheaT. Dennis Franchionne is in Knoxvegas.
