Clark apologizes to Penn State Nation

A distraught Penns State quarterback Daryll Clark choked back tears as he spoke after the game. It was his fourth-quarter interception, only his third of the season, that ended what once had been a promising Penn State possession late in the game. The Nittany Lions went from having a first down at the Iowa 23 to a third-and-24 from the 37 after a holding call against guard Rich Ohrnberger. On third down, Clark overthrew an open Derrick Williams, producing the Tyler Sash interception that began Iowa's winning field-goal drive. "I want to apologize to the whole Penn State nation for my play today," Clark said. "I take full responsibility for that loss."

I truly feel sorry for this guy.

November 9, 2008  10:41 AM ET

We still love and support ya kid! Yes, it was a bad day[coaching too I might add] and had the chances to put it way but didn't. The Big 10 title and a Rose Bowl berth ain't to shabby either. Keep your heads up and win out and you'll be BT champs....you have to give credit to Iowa as well.

Cue JoePud blaming the officials....3...2....1...

November 9, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Clark has nothing to apologize when you take a look at his full body of work in 2008.

November 9, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Clark shouldn't apologize. He had a good season and if they can get by Michigan State, then you go to Rose Bowl which is a nice consolation prize.

November 9, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Daryll, you have given us a great season. no need to say anything. without you as the leader, we might be 5-5. Go out and crush IU and then take care of MSU. 11-1 is a great season. See you in te Rose Bowl. WE ARE.........PENN STATE you are a class act young man

November 9, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Clark should not apologize. He had a bad game and made a very costly mistake, but it took a team effort to lose that game. Add in the weather and fans factor, and an upset to an underrated Iowa team is what you get.

The coaches made plenty of misstakes too, not to mention PSU's defense that made an average QB look like the next John Elway.

November 9, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Nothing we can do about it now. We're still a good football team.

November 9, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Hey Daryll,

The loss was a team effort (don't forget the dropped passes on offense and the blown coverage on defense). Just get the team ready to win out and go to the Rose Bowl.

November 9, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Hey Daryll....You win as a TEAM and you lose as a TEAM. There were many other factors in our loss to Iowa. We can still make it to the Rose Bowl. Hold your head high!

PENN STATE PROUD!
Class of 82'

November 9, 2008  12:40 PM ET

I can't believe it...someone taking responsibility for their actions. The kid is a class act!

November 9, 2008  12:49 PM ET

I am actually happy for what he did it takes guts.

November 9, 2008  12:53 PM ET

I have to chime in about this. I'm glad to see a student-athlete stand up and take the blame....even if it wasn't his fault.
This was a trap game for PSU all the way. For the first time in many, MANY years, the defense was lesser to the offense. With that being known, I'm not sure why Galen Hall didn't call better plays in the 4th qtr. I think on that last PSU drive (ending in interception), there was a stretch where D. Williams had 3 or 4 straight plays at QB. Then they followed it up with 3 straight plays directly giving D. Williams the ball? Derrick run left. Derrick run right. Derrick sweep left. C'mon Galen!! We know that D. Willaims is a stud, but so does the rest of the nation. When you line him up in posistion to get the ball 6 times in a row, teams tend to figure that out.
In the end, it was the defense that couldn't carry the team. Albeit I'm pretty damned biased against the pass interference call on 3rd and 15, outside of that you could feel the momentum against us. It was going to happen. Which is why $hit didn't go flying against the wall when they lost!!!!!!
Granted I'm a pretty big PSU homer, I never once thought we were NC material. We didn't have the D to belong. Going 9-0 was a sweet ride. Finishing strong and spanking USC or OrSU **** in the Rose Bowl will still be pretty damn nice.
Are we elite this year? Probably. Are we NC elite? No.
But...

WE ARE.....

November 9, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Please, If any of you think this kid doesnt deserve to be benched you're nuts. Besides from being a wildy inaccurate passer all game ( also is Colombus) he caused two turnovers that pretty much lost the game for us. Class act? Watch how he acted on the sideline in the Ohio State game. Bench him Pat Devlin would have won that game.

November 9, 2008  01:07 PM ET

What a joke... If there were playoffs in College Football he wouldn't even need to apologize. No one game should be able to eliminate a team from Title hopes, nor should one bad game demoralize a young man because one bad throw took away all hopes of a championship.

Keep up your head Darryl, you have a long time ahead of you to show everyone what we alrady know, you can really play.

Actually, LSU pretty much beat itself last night. But your point stands, Penn State was overrated, and pretty much everybody outside of the Big10 knew it.

ha-ha , guys, PSU is still pretty much in the mix for the NCG, I agree PSU chances are now minimal, but hey who knows. Remember 2007??? Plus Big 12 teams will kill each other, so I do not see how a 2 loss Big 12 champion(if Mizzou wins Big 12) can go to the NCG in front of 1 loss USC or 1 loss PSU? SEC champion might be a 2 loss Florida team as well (Florida plays FSU in Tallahassee!). So again, if Mizzou wins the Big 12 championship game and Florida beats Bama ....PSU might end up in the NCG. It is way too early to talk about the final BCS standing ... plus PSU has fallen only to #7(or 8) in the rankings.

Daryll Clark is a very proud young man and a credit to JoPa's program - which has certainly taken some off-the-field hits in recent years. Clark has willingly negated the overall poor play of his teammates by chosing to shoulder the blame for the Lion's lose to Iowa. I hope his mates reward him by stepping up again on the football field these next 2 weeks.
