Pettitte covering his bases

Andy Pettitte has said many times that he wants to pitch for the Yankees in 2009. But that didn't stop him from filing for free agency yesterday. Pettitte filed the necessary papers with the league office that would permit him to negotiate with other teams beginning Friday if he so desires. The 36-year-old lefthander has consistently maintained his desire to be back in pinstripes. But as recently as Friday night, he said he had yet to hear anything concrete from general manager Brian Cashman about the team's interest in having him back. Cashman and manager Joe Girardi have told the media they are interested in bringing Pettitte back. Pettitte says the sentiments haven't come directly to him, though, which could be an indication that their interest depends on the terms of a contract. A Yankees source said last week that Pettitte would need to take a pay cut from his 2008 salary of $16 million.

He's the youngest looking 36 year old I've ever seen. I bet he'd fail a Botox test.

No Red Sox thread today......I'm lost. I may have to read a real newspaper.

Andy:

Repeat after me....She's a queen killer.....

how old is this guy?

With no concrete offers coming through from the Yankees, you can't blame him for filing for FA .... just covering his derriere and should give him more bargaining power with the Yankees. Good luck Andy! At least I don't see the name "Boras" mentioned so thankfully he's not involved?

Whether he had/has something in the works or not....
this is not a 'smart' move- it's simply the appropriate
BUSINESS move. period. Not sure why this is a story

I can see it now...some seedy dive in the outskirts of Houston. A bloated cracked up Mindy McCready singing duets with Andy in a creepy lounge act. Roidger sitting all proud and puffed up stage right.

HAHA! This sounds like a repeat of last time his contract was up. Take care, Andy, thanks for the memories.

Even with an awful last 3rd of 2008 Pettitte still had a 4.50 era in baseball's toughest division. He's a tough competitor who has proven repeatedly he can pitch in pinstripes and in the playoffs. Sign him to a 1 year contract for a reasonable price for both parties. Many so called better pitchers than Pettitte have come to the Bronx only to fail miserably. This should be a no brainer.

So you don't want Pettite back?

Given the choice between Pettite and Moose, I'll take Moose. Have a good morning, Uts, hopefully I'll catch you later. Gotta be gone for a few hours.

As long as he'll sign for $10M or less, sure. He's worth no more than that.

Moose told Joe Girardi that he's retiring.

This is just a formality. Plus, since Pettitte has gone on record that he wants to play only for the Yankees, what's the rush? Cashman stated last week that he wants Pettitte to come back. There simply are bigger concerns that are consuming Cashman's time. This deal will get done, just not for a while. If Pettitte starts pouting again and whining about feeling unwanted (which prompted him to sign with Houston), then so be it. But I really believe he will be back in the Bronx in 2009.

As a Sox fan I hope he comes back. He's not what he used to be and has struggled against Boston as of late.

Did he call you, too? Because this doesn't seem to be in any of the media outlets.

To be honest- and I watch basically every game.......

He is the SINGLE most improtant reason we missed the playoffs.
- we counted on him to be an ABOVE AVERAGE 2nd half pitcher and he was simply AWFUL. Had we won 3-4 of his last 1/3 starts....we would've at least been in contention for the wild card- instead of being done with 2+ weeks to go
