Tennessee has tabbed North Carolina coach Butch Davis as the leading candidate to replace ousted football coach Phillip Fulmer, multiple sources have told the News Sentinel. Whether UT can secure Davis remains to be seen. Davis has said publicly that he is happy at North Carolina because of the family environment in Chapel Hill and the opportunity to rebuild a program that has long struggled. If UT can't get Davis, Mike Leach of Texas Tech and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati will become strong possibilities. Tim Brewster from Minnesota will also be considered.

Any chance Vince Young could use his senior year eligibility to play while he sits out for the Titans?

A friend of mine from TENNESSEE,said it was a lock that Steve SPURRIER from South Carolina was the #1 man. You know he is from TENN. Jerry

spurrier, no way. i live in knoxville and that is not happening. They would firer mike hamilton and the boosters hate spurrier anyway. We want mike leach.

I'm surprised that a SEC power (traditional one at that) would want an innovator like Mike Leach as the head coach, with his spread air raid attack and all. I guess they see UF made it work within two years. But where's Texas' DC Will Muschamp in this conversation? I thought Tennessee wanted him badly.

November 10, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Brian Kelly will be a top tier coach wherever he lands. He has won everywhere he's been. UT may want a higher profile guy but he would do well there.

November 10, 2008  08:54 AM ET

as a UC grad, I would hate to lose Kelly, but he's bound to go somewhere with a higher profile.

What happen to Kiffin and Gruden?

November 10, 2008  09:16 AM ET

leave Butch alone.....

please...

November 10, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Go with Mike Leach. I want to see that offense in the SEC.

November 10, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Vol's hang up the thoughts on Butch... He ain't going. Adn I doubt you're gonna get Leach to go there either. But you will probably be able to land Kelly. There's always Ty Willingham and Tommy Bowden... hahah

Is Fatboy trying to get revenge on the Vols these last few games? He keeps putting that goat Crompton in, BJ Coleman is a talented QB that Fulmer won't let play, and he keeps using two bums in front of him.

Mike Dubose is available

November 10, 2008  10:19 AM ET

As well as Fill Fulmer

November 10, 2008  10:30 AM ET

yeah as much as I would like to see Butch go, he'll stay Chapel Hill. He will only use this to get himself and his coaches more money and new contracts.

November 10, 2008  10:39 AM ET

If I were a Vols fan I would take Kelly in a heartbeat. Look at what this guy has done in the state of Ohio, where he's destroyed in recruiting by Sweatervest, and leads the Big East with a myriad of QB injuries. At this point, Kelly has to be up for Coach of the Year considerations.

November 10, 2008  10:43 AM ET

I'd try to get Kiffin or some other NFL guy b/c that seems to work well in the NCAA.

If Leach goes to Tennessee, it's only a matter of time before the SEC defenses' statistics start to look like the Big 12's after the explosion of spread offenses with coaches that know how to run it.

November 10, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Butch Davis to me would be the #1 choice. Look at what he did at Miami and UNC. That is simply amazing.

November 10, 2008  11:39 AM ET

I would be surprised if UNC does not counter with an equal offer. Why would he want to go to Tenessee anyway?

Whippersnappers! Tennessee was known as "Air Volunteers" and "Wide Receiver U" long before the term, "spread offense" entered the popular vernacular of college football.
