Dirk questions Mavs' effort

Josh Howard's absence didn't come close to explaining the Mavericks latest disappointment. Pick on the defense if you want. The Los Angeles Clippers did. Of course, the Mavericks offense didn't exactly inspire poetry. Poor defense and bad offense will do a team in every time, even when the opponent is a Clippers team that had been winless until Sunday's 103-92 breakthrough. But that only scratches the surface as to what bothers the Mavericks these days. After the team's fourth loss of the young season, Dirk Nowitzki questioned the team's effort and said it has been coasting. "If you don't compete hard, it's not about Xs and Os,'' Nowitzki said. "You can run whatever play you want. You can have all the schemes you want defensively. We've just got to push ourselves to play harder. "I don't know what it is. I don't know what's going on. We don't leave it all out there, and that's what you've got to do.''

Does he play any defense himself? Anyone know?
This guy shouldn't be the one talking. His points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks have all been dropping in the last few years.
He is a starting PF who plays 35+ mins a night, and he gets likes 7 rebounds and less than a block a game. Facts and stats tell stories sometimes

Everybody knew Dallas will struggle. Having a 36 year old point guard who does not have a reliable shot is recipe for disaster. The good news is his contract comes off the books after this year so they might as well tank it and draft a point guard next season.

Detroit with Iverson is in the same predicament to some extent. Only difference is Detroit is in the East.

need a coach to push these guys ,WHERE IA AVERGY

November 10, 2008  08:28 AM ET

I smell a trade coming....

November 10, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Avery was the only person keeping this team a float. He preached defense and kept this team in check. He got them to the finals. They needed a GOAT because they can't trade all the soft players.

November 10, 2008  08:32 AM ET

They need to revamp the whole team. The team takes too many jump shots. No post player and they don't play a sense of urgency. Dirk will be criticized for speaking out but he will also be criticized if he does not speak out. They need to have a major trade right now. Maybe trade JKidd, Dampier, and Stackhouse to New York for Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph, and Stephon Marbury. Dampier was always the cost of not having a good low post scorer down low. He is untradeable. Stack and JET are just costing right now because they got their long term contract last year. They don't have that killer instinct in their body anymore. That's why a change of scenery is needed for some of these guys.

Short window of opportunity in the ultra competitive west.....The mavs are quickly becoming a fading power, kind of like the Kings of a few years ago

As Hllywood says......
I almost choked on my morning coffee when I read this.

- this might be the WORST thought up trade I have ever heard

I thought you want to get rid of those 3 Knicks and this could be the best scenario. You get something in return for Marbury and Curry who are not giving you anything at all. You get Kidd who will be the leader of your run and gun team and if he does not pan out then you can get rid of him at the end of the season. You got Stack and Damp who are not trouble makers and know the meaning of team chemistry. So I'm confused by your comments.

Well put Dirk. I think Cuban should replace Rick Carlisle as head coach.

November 10, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Dallas is supposed to struggle.

November 10, 2008  09:14 AM ET

When has Dirk ever left IT out there on the defensive end. Dirk can't post 6'6'' two guards. Now he want to call his team out.

November 10, 2008  09:15 AM ET

They got what they wanted. An easy going coach who's letting them freestyle on offense. How's that working for you Dirk??? You can bash Avery for his military style coaching all you want but they had the best record in the league and actually got to the finals under him. I wouldn't be surprised if they missed the playoffs all together. Mark Cuban must be kicking himself for refusing to trade for Kobe or Garnett. What an idiot!

Elaboration: Dallas has a new coach, a good but aging point guard, and questionable offensive options outside of Dirk.

Oh yeah, they play no defense in a deep Western Conference.

STRUGGLIN'!!

November 10, 2008  09:21 AM ET

I thought that was what Avery Johnson was trying to inspire in you soft guys. Play hard and "Play to win the game."

November 10, 2008  09:25 AM ET

What Dirk doesn't understand is that everybody in the West except the Mavericks, got better. It's going to be a long season in Dallas, but hey, they can always blame Avery. Oh wait, Avery's gone. I love it when I'm right. I called this months ago.

Kidd trade would not be good they need his contract to come off the books next season. Dirk should be critized because he does not lead by example, when was the last time he played defense.

Listen to HOVA . He's been studying.

Dirk is never going to be a leader. The guy's as soft as puddy. What kind of player with his height and body size opts to shoot from 3 then drive to the hoop? A softy who's scared to take a hit, that's who.
