Weis to resume calling plays

Awash in raindrops and chagrin on Saturday night -- and not necessarily in equal measure, despite occasional downpours in suburban Boston -- Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis declared he would become more involved with his team's ailing offense. On Sunday evening, he claimed not to know the degree of his involvement. That would be defined in offensive meetings later that night. When he reconvenes with reporters Tuesday afternoon, Weis will explain his new M.O. as it concerns the Irish 'O.' That plan should involve nothing less than Weis once again calling the offensive plays in Notre Dame's three remaining games. Any announcement to the contrary Tuesday would be a surprise, and possibly another miscalculation in a season sliding perilously close to calamity.

Does anyone really care anymore. Weis is turning out to be nothing but a great recruiter who doesn't have the wherewithal to develop the talent he gets or to have that talent play in a system that is conducive to winning football games. Almost time to start over in South Bend, again.

So, all of this hubris during the offseason about how "I've learned to delegate, and let my coaches coach" means?? Dude, you clock is ticking. The TRUTH suggests placing one of those turkey thermometers that pop up when you are done.

I like this move as I hope it further exposes Weis as a horrible play caller. To put it bluntly, his play calling is like his knee. Both are a complete mess.

And as much as I commented about how well Clausen has played this year, he did not look like he has in prior games this past Saturday. He was no Nick Sheridan! :P

will he be able to effectively call the game without tapes of the opponents D signals and his press box laptop? I don't want to hear the "youth" thing, how long is that an excuse for this deadbeat. teams all over the country have Fr. and Soph play quite effectively, talent is way overrated IMO,it shows also the diff in HS fball in the midwest vs the south, not even in the same zipcode.

RightWrong - Mr TalkOuttaDaNeck will sue you for his botched fat stomach bypass straight to his fat **** surgery. Careful - he will eat your baby!

Every time I get sick to my stomach about my USC Trojans losing to Oregon State, I redirect my mind to Notre Dame... and smile. USC 70 ND 0 won't be enough points for me in a couple of weeks. Charlie will be back interviewing for high school jobs in New Jersey before we know it.

November 10, 2008  11:10 AM ET

It's actually quite understandable why Charlie would do this. After the offense showed just how impotent it was last Saturday, it's time for Charlie to take the reins again.

One trick pony with one trick knee.

Where's Gariboy today? There are few things better in life than watching BC hand another loss to ND. That's six in a row, kids. Imagine what BC could do if it got these 5-stars who instead go to ND and waste away for four years.

The announcers during the BC-ND game made note of the two bodyguards who now flank Weis during games to prevent another collision. If the bodyguards really want to help Charlie, they should slap out of his hands all of those Egg McMuffins and bowls of ice cream that he ingests every day.

It would take more than two bodyguards to rip those egg mcmuffins out of his hands. You would probably need to get a large animal specialist, like an ostrich handler or one of those guys who tranquilize rhinos

Let's hope the next ND coach is one who knows how to both recruit and coach college kids. Nick Saban and Lou Holtz both tried the pros and quickly realized it is a different type of coaching, and very few pro coaches have done well at the college level, with a few exceptions (Pete Carroll).
Coaching ND is getting to be like coaching the Oakland Raiders; who wants the job? Urban Meyer knew what he was doing when he choose Florida over ND.

Maybe Weiss can reunite with Romeo Crennel next season..... I hear there may be an opening at Saginaw Valley State.....

November 10, 2008  12:50 PM ET

If ND gets a new coach, that coach should do well with the talent that is available. The stats have it on this one....Notre Dame is 1-15 with teams have winning records. Yikes. And Tenuta's blitzing defense hasn't produced sacks at all...would giving them one more year make a difference?

I can't believe I'm saying this but it may be time to cut losses...

November 10, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Weiss should resume not being Notre Dams's head coach, and his diet.

November 10, 2008  12:59 PM ET

i thought "the days of losing to Purdue and Pitt were over" what a bufoon.

November 10, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Mr. Weis is one of the most overrated coaches of all time. He gets to much credit for the Patriots. ND problems go all the way back to when Lou left and they installed Bob Davies. Then there was the O'Leary mess and then they went for Willingham, he has proven he not a Division 1 head coach at Washington. ND needs to look in the mirror and decide if they really want to win or just live in the past. THERE LAST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP was 1988 for God's sakes......the new college game has passed them by.

November 10, 2008  01:05 PM ET

what people didn't know was that by "schematic advantage" he was talking about stealing D signald and using the pressbox laptop.

November 10, 2008  01:24 PM ET

Weis' offensive genius in the pros was Tom Brady walking up to the line and calling an audible out of Weis' call. Then Weis would eat 8 chalupas
