Howard, Hamels may be hard to lock up

The Phillies know who and why. The what, when and where - and especially how - is another story. But at some point Phillies management is optimistic it'll get superstar first baseman Ryan Howard and No. 1 starter Cole Hamels signed to longterm contracts. The good news is the Phillies do have time on their side with free agency not an option for Howard until after the 2011 season and Hamels after 2012. What definitely is a major concern though is neither player has yet to agree to a contract since reaching the majors. And their price tags, very high going into the 2008 season, have skyrocketed. "I can't imagine either one of them wanting to do anything workable right now," a team source said.

Sign Hamels long term...trade Howard to an AL team within the next couple of seasons (IF he wants the kind of money that ARod makes).

Agree withyou FuzzyDunlop.

Why is it hard to PAY them...????
there is no salary cap-
Philly- like or hate the fans- have a VERY good market-
especially when there is a good team.

PAY THEM- don't be cheap-
ESPECIALLY HAMMELS.....

I agree with jgb, make sure you sign Hamels, but I think we can plrbably handle letting Howard go. I heard there is a prospect in the minors right now that is as good as if not better than Howard. Give him another year or two to work his way up.

Really? What's his name?

Lock up Hamels. Arbitrate Howard again this year for 17 mil and then trade him while you can get something. His numbers are amazing, however he will walk for huge $ once his no longer arbitration eligible. It would suck to lose him without getting something in return. I see him in Yankee pinstripes for some reason down the road....oh wait that reason is because they will be able to pay him.

Neither Hammels not Howard are in a hurry to re sign with Philly? I thought all these d@m athletes wanted was to win? They just win the World Series and now they cant wait to get out of town? These pro athletes are unreal these days. Does anyone out there really think the Phillies management is gonna screw these 2 guys? I guarantee you they get more than a fair offer and BOTH of them will try and hold the Phillies hostage.

Why not the Phillies held them hostage with low ball arbitration numbers....Until this year for Howard.....Hamels made 500k last year.

Are you serious? Low ball offer to Howard? Just because he not the highest paid 1B in history doesnt make it a low ball offer and how many games has Hamels won in his career? Maybe 40? Why should they have paid him like a Hall Of Famer before he even did anything? Now they should get paid but holding the teams hostage is ridiculous anymore.

Do your research. Cole Hamels made 500k last year. Before this season, Howard wasn't making a mil either. You trying to say that So Taguchi is worth more than Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard? Didn't think so.

Pay attention.

I dont care if they stay or go but you saying the front office was cheap is crazy. How many teams give a pitcher a multi million dolalr offer before they have really won 30 or 40 games? Now that hes about 25 yrs old he will start getting paid big but no teams shell out money to unproven pitchers.

Pay attention? Youre the one who needs to pay attention. They signe Taguchi as a free agent didnt they and thats why they overpaid for him. Howard and Hamels are now entering their big money years and they should get paid now but paying these guys before they have really established themselves as studs is what ruins teams if those guys dont pan out.

I'll be the first to tell you that I don't particularly care for Weapon X. However, BOHICA and BYUcougar, I think you are missing the point that he is trying to make. He's not saying that the Phillies' front office was cheap with them, but that they made the business moves that you'd expect from them and you shouldn't expect anything less from the players when it's their turn.

- wow - you are a bit off-base.....

At their age- low/mid 20's.....they want to get PAID. PERIOD.
- that's business- both have 10+ years left

Once players get a little older- say 30-32 they care more about
'winning' and 'getting into the right situation'...because they've
already MADE $$$$$$ - and now they realize that they can afford
to take/make a little less and be in a better situation

It's strickly business........

And as far as philly 'screwing' them........DAMN STRAIGHT philly
wil at least TRY and screw them- it's BUSINESS- not personal

Admittedly, this may be a bit unfair.
