Gruden dismisses Tenn. rumors

Bucs coach Jon Gruden's name has been linked to a coaching vacancy -- this one at the University of Tennessee, where he once was a graduate assistant -- and Gruden is forced to shoot down another rumor. "I've said it from the beginning, this is the only job I've really ever wanted," Gruden said. "As long as the Glazers will have me, I'll be here. I've got a lot of respect for Tennessee. I grew up down there a little bit. My wife is from there. But this is where I want to be, and I can only make myself that clear." Even if Gruden were interested in the job, it's not a given the Bucs would let him out of his contract, which in January was extended through the 2011 season. Another consideration: Gruden makes more than $4-million annually, though Tennessee might be poised to offer a package competitive with NFL salaries.

Can you imagine Chuckie on the recruiting trail sitting in a living room talking to parents...

$4 mill and 3 years on a contract... he ain't going no where

November 11, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Come on over to Auburn

November 11, 2008  09:24 AM ET

He'd be terrifying, but he'd get kids to commit. I mean, all he's gotta do is flash that Super Bowl ring of his & say he can get the kid to the NFL because he knows what it takes for kids to make it there.

He ain't going. NEXT!

November 11, 2008  01:13 PM ET

HE JUST MIGHT COME, IF WIFE SAYS SO.

That's funny , he could help the Big 10 because parents would want their kids to play in a different conference.

Gruden as a college coach!!! no chance! he is typical NFL coach! its like asking miss universe to be a nun!!

Really? Why don't you ask Charlie Weis how that strategy is working out. Jon Gruden is among the most overrated coaches in the game.

November 11, 2008  03:39 PM ET

But, if he did go to college, he could collect a whole lot more QB's

November 11, 2008  05:20 PM ET

GRUDEN WOULD BE GREAT IN KNOXVILLE,LETS DONT COUNT HIM OUT JUST YET.

AMEN. I wouldn't want to be recruiting in SEC with him in town. He would get kids to go to war.

Jon Gruden won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson at QB for God sakes....he can coach. Charlie Weis should never be a HEAD coach...........let him hold Belchicks clipboard instead.

Bill Walsh, maybe.

Gruden was in knoxville last year and met with some boosters. he got the pitch and turned it down. the only way UT could have gotten him would be if the bucs ended the season with a sub-.500 record.

ps eyes wideopen, you seriously think gruden is overrated? he has managed to get the bucs to the playoffs last year with ernest graham as his running back. they guy couldn't cut it at UF but is suddenly a stud in the nfl? that is coaching my friend, some pretty darn good coaching if you ask me.

<he has managed to get the bucs to the playoffs last year with ernest graham as his running back. they guy couldn't cut it at UF but is suddenly a stud in the nfl?>

Graham was a stud @ UF (5 yd per carry career average)and showed it again @ Tampa (4.1 yd per carry career average). How many running backs are you aware of who would 1) Volunteer to play fullback cause the team had a need and 2) Be smart enough to have the fullbacks playbook memorized when he did so?

I sure hope you Vol fans get what you want, Chuckie would be a the worst recruiter in the conference which would be good news for everyone else and you cats would remain a virtually guaranteed win every year for my Boys.

Chuckie to Tennessee....hehehehehehe

I'm sure Gruden is a lot classier than Saban, but these rumors will continue to swirl until Tennessee hires a coach not named Jon Gruden.
