Cubs: Peavy complicating Dempster deal

Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood were supposed to be the Cubs' priorities going into the off-season, but the unexpected availability of San Diego's Jake Peavy may have altered the game plan. Atlanta might have a better group of prospects to give San Diego for the 2007 Cy Young Award winner, and the Braves are still believed to be front-runners in the Peavy sweepstakes. Yet the simple fact that the Cubs are willing to spend $64 million or more to acquire another top-line starter could give Dempster pause before he re-signs at below-market value. The question Dempster must ask himself is: Why should I take a hometown discount when the team is apparently willing to spend more money on Peavy? The Cubs have exclusive negotiating rights with their own free agents through Thursday. They are believed to have offered Dempster $50 million over four years, a number he should be able to beat on the open market. Atlanta and the New York Yankees are prospective bidders, and with starting pitching at a premium, others are certain to join in.

Dempster will be 32 next year. 60 million for 4 years isn't a bad deal for either side. I'm betting that's what's going to happen with Dempster and the Cubs. Solid starting pitching is expensive.

I hope the Cubs are able to work out things with Dempster. Like you said, money-wise, he'd come at a hefty sum, but fair in the current market. And in this market, it's gonna be hard to find a good closer to replace Wood if he leaves. Probably better to retain the cards that won for you and then work to bring in outside help...

Dempster needs to be signed by the Cubs, Wood is not that big of a deal, Marmol will slide right into his spot nicely, I feel the Cubs would miss Dempster alot more than Wood

I hope the Yankees get him and Lowe.

Not only that, but there is NO way that Dempster will be able to repeat his success in the NL Central -- he'll be totally exposed in the AL East. Lowe is not that good but is going to command a HUGE payday.

Why is everyone so high on Lowe? Yankees need to get younger. If they want to sign older starting pitchers then why not just resign Moose or Pettitte?

I have been reading your evaluations of the available starters and I agree with most of it. I really think CC is a cut above what is available, and as much as you detest the Yankees, this Yankee fan appreciates this talent out of the Cleveland org. Until he fails in the playoffs then you can tell me you told me so.

Hey BC.

I don't get Lowe's value either. If he had value in the AL then I think the Sox would certainly bring him back. He's come out and said he'd love to come back to Boston and he is well liked here.

He has value in the NL. I would think the Cubs would be a good place for him.

Exactly. If he is so good and has in my view told the Sox he would love to come back and probably for below what he could get on the market then why are they not interested? He would fare better in the NL and the Cubs would be a good fit for him.

Honestly I'd resign Moose and Pettitte as both would be for short terms deals at below market value (they could get away with $10M a year for each when the market has starters getting for $16M and up) and both are guys who the Yankees know can pitch in a high pressure city. The Yankees would then need to sign CC or Burnett to go along with Moose, Andy, Wang and Joba.

its never guaranteed that ur getting a great pitcher back though...Peavy was nothing great last year, and your counting on ur offense (that the padres didnt back peavy up with) to back up peavy and give him wins...

not an easy task when it was ur offense that crapped out in the playoffs completely...oh along with pitching and defense and every facet of the game...

im skeptic on both deals

It's all in fun, anyway.

I like CC. I'd like to see him continue improving and making a name for himself. I'm concerned about his ability to handle the New York pressure, playoffs or otherwise. Even if he goes to the Yankees, I'd like him to continue to be the **** until the playoffs because I like him. I'd like him to have a good career.

You're right, I despise the Yankees, but I do respect them -- unlike the White Sox who I despise and do not respect. ;-)

That's a pretty insane thing to say. He was, easily, one of the top-10 pitchers in the majors. I'd consider that pretty great.

Just a warning: if you bring up his 10-11 record, I'm going to feed your dick to you.

For what it's worth, Slinky's a damn good cook -- depending on how he prepares it, you might enjoy it.
