FC Toronto in market for designated player

Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd. board of directors have given their stamp of approval to Toronto FC's quest for a designated player -- a marquee player that doesn't count against their salary cap. One of the players Mo Johnston had an eye on to fill the DP spot was 25-year-old Canadian international Iain Hume, a top striker in the League Championship with Barnsley. But Hume was badly injured Sunday in a match against Sheffield United in which he suffered a fractured skull and internal bleeding after being elbowed in the face by Sheffield captain Chris Morgan. It's doubtful Hume -- who signed a $2.2 million contract earlier this season -- will be able to resume play before next season.

Even if Hume recovers well, he's not exactly the type of player I think of for a DP slot.

Damn that kid took a beating. I can't think of a DP player. Del Piero?

I think it would be smart for FC Toronto to take an international from Canada who plays abroad. Paul Stalteri comes to mind. He is the right age and plays (played?) for the Canadian national team. He would be a relative bargain, IMO, as he is playing for Tottenham (on loan to Fulham, IIRC). But maybe Hume as well.

I agree about trying to get a Canadian from abroad, but not for DP designation and money. Not only is that a waste of resources, but it also may keep players it should be used on from wanting to come through it being cheapened.

He'd be a nice replacement for Wynne who's surely gone in January. Can cover both back positions and they could get him pretty much on a free from Tottenham (he's in the reserves now, not out on loan). The problem is, it's hard to sell bringing in a defender as a DP. Marquee guys are supposed to be flashy and score goals, something Stalteri won't do much of. What about Andy Cole? Or Pauletta (if the money is right). The ultimate guy would be D'Ro.

This is probably the right time to get him, he can't be thinking straight right now.
