Economic woes in San Antonio

The Spurs have been one of the most frugal organizations given ownership with limited resources compared to other organizations and a small market. And now the market is suffering worse than most because of overall economic factors with huge job losses in telecommunications and the auto industry in San Antonio. Without a big corporate base, there are major economic fears in the organization, one league executive told me. You can see it looking at the Spurs payroll with only Tim Duncan and Tony Parker under contract after next season and a diminished bench.

A money crunch with the team in decline, that is a bad combination.

mini Dynasty is over I guess

This is only the beginning. Small market teams in all the sports are going to start feeling the pinch. But sports owners have only themselves to blame for paying such ridiculous amounts of money to the players.

November 11, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Nah, they're jus tryin to get under the cap for 2010 so they can get 'Bron, D-Wade, or CB4. haha

November 11, 2008  10:02 AM ET

geez that's an excuse to their frugality

It's sad to see money bring a great organization to its knees. If they are really concerned about the economic tides they need to break up the team asap. I'm sure Pat Riley will give up Wade for Duncan. As for Ginobli and Parker they will be gone in a blink. Then they will be left with players that make under 4mil. Now thats some real savings!

The queens of flopping spurs suck!

November 11, 2008  11:28 AM ET

bad timing for the spurs but we knew it wouldnt last for ever and I called it early on this summer.

This isn't MLB where there is no cap.....
you argument about small market teams is not valid
- if you put out a good product, people will come

And as far as paying players too much....
also not valid- it's not paying too much
it's BAD MANAGEMENT - giving the wrong players too much

San Antonio has a lot of money tied into Ginobili, Parker, and most of all Tim Duncan. Maybe too much money the reason why they can't get a better supporting cast.

I'm sure Spurs fans will kill me for this (and deservedly so) but it might be time to think about moving Tim Duncan. Not saying their dynasty is over but you got a good young building block in Parker, a scorer in Ginobili and an aging Duncan. You could move him pick up some players and start over.

Can't roll with you on this one. Duncan IS the Spurs. They just need to acquire a few more "pieces." No winning team has ever lost money. Build a winner like they have in the past, and watch the turnstiles. The only place losers make money is Madison Square Garden.

Duncan is still worth big money. I would pay him but now that they getting older and losing their cheap vets in Brent Barry and Robert Horry to name a couple they are struggling. The vets bring leadership to the locker room, but Duncan can still hold that role. He needs more pieces though.

Listen up homie. Grab a calculator cos I need you to do some math.

We're talking saving money here. Duncan is owed an average of 20 million for the next four years. That's 80 million.

Dwayne Wade on the other hand makes 14mil this year and 16 mil next year - thats 30 million then he becomes a free. If you subtract that from Duncan's 80 million that's 50 million savings for San Antonio not to mention they get a younger affable super star.

There's big money, and there's bigger money. I won't call you an idiot. You can find a nice adjective to describe your lack of information.

spurs will repeat their '96 season...acquire the #1 pick that will compliment duncan that will exit like david robinson did...with 2 more rings.

And Ford Field where the Detroit Lions play. That's fifty years of losing with two trips to the playoffs in all those years. But the money pours in. You tell me...

November 12, 2008  06:19 AM ET

Wow, that's funny from the NBA, we have a EXPANDING housing market, more and more jobs moving here, and an enemployment rate at 4%. Yeah, we have it bad in San Antonio!
