Weis in trouble at Notre Dame?

Exactly when are Notre Dame's football fans going to get fed up? When are the priests going to get hot under the collar? When will the student body be sick to death of what it is witnessing there in the leprechaun colony? When is everybody who worships at the house of Touchdown Jesus and the home of the Golden Dome going to let the coach there know that his grace period is up? In 2007 and 2008 alone, here is what the Frightening Irish of Charlie Weis have done: Lost 13 of their last 21games. Been shut out three times. Took the worst beating in a season opener in 120 years of Notre Dame football. Had a nine-loss season for the first time. Were defeated by Navy, which it had sunk 43 times in a row. Accordingly, there are some who believe that Saturday's game in Baltimore against the Midshipmen could be sink-or-swim time for ND's coach. One more unfathomable defeat could turn out to be the last straw -- No More Mr. Weis Guy.

I thought we would get through a day without seeing that picture.

ND needs to start putting it's money into the hockey program. Jackson will have that team back in the NCCA finals soon enough.

In my head I am having a debate about what would happen if you throw a 600 pound man in a large pool of water. Its a funny image. I bet Weis would be more buoyant than you'd expect...

1-16 against ranked teams...how does he still have a job?

November 11, 2008  07:56 AM ET

If they have a losing season, which is still possible, he is gone.

November 11, 2008  08:09 AM ET

It is still better than 1-16 in the NFL...Like the Lions over the past 17 games

November 11, 2008  08:10 AM ET

You'd think that with their own television network and their "tradition" that Notre Dame would be in a position to hire someone who actually had head coaching experience. Maybe even someone with a solid history of success at a BCS program.

However, the fact of the matter is that Ebersole and NBC are losers for affiliating themselves with these chumps. Notre Dames 'tradition" is now one of over hype, disgraceful calls week in and week out by the referees in their favor, and still managing to be a crappy football team.

November 11, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Do you think he will resign for the "betterment of the program"....or is he too cocky for that?

November 11, 2008  08:37 AM ET

I don't understand how he got here, Charlie inherited a great team when he came to Notre Dame. With all the great recruiting classes coming in and still posting mediocre seasons. Leaves me scratching my head.........

November 11, 2008  08:42 AM ET

they are stuck with him.. The only way they could afford to buyout his contract is if the boosters step up to the plate. With he economy in shambles and a big tax hike coming next year, I don't see it happening. Here is an idea, maybe they should join the Ivy league or the Big Ten where they can at least compete??

November 11, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Do you really think they can compete in the Big Ten? I would say it is still the third best conference. They might be better off in the Big East.

November 11, 2008  08:47 AM ET

Amazing how much patience they have with him, but pulled the plug so quickly on Tyrone Willingham. After Weis' first year he received a contract extention. Willingham-NOT! So much more patience for the fat white guy. Racism? Ya think?

November 11, 2008  08:51 AM ET

All this firing talk of Charlie Weis isn't the answer. He's had two good crops of players left by Willingham, and then had a mess to deal with since there was no top recruiting classes. In the last two years you can see these players starting to break out. Give it one more year. You can see the absolute talent on the team, they are just making "young" mistakes. Inconsistent freshman and sophomores. If they don't produce next year... then I would start looking at the coaching staff. Until then... hold on tight. You are with the economy anyway...

After seeing the game live Saturday, this guy is not a college coach, he is pouty and whiney. He doesn't understand the need to motivate at the college level and then he blames his underlings for bad play calling what a great example to set young men.. He isn't going to get the top athletes, Notre Dame is too hard a school, but if Vanderbilit and Wake can compete so should ND. Develop players Charlie, can you do that?

November 11, 2008  08:58 AM ET

ND is playing an increasing weaker schedule (who they play and who is down) and not beating anyone of note. The wait till next year recruit story is all ND can sell. This evades the reality that Weis is not developing players. How long do you give the never been a head a coach to learn how to be a head coach? How many of your student athletes and fans get short changed while you the ND administration continues to search for some sign that Weis might someday be a even a better than average head coach? ND acted appropriately and decisively with Willingham, the only difference hear is that it is more expensive and you are now looking for an AD and a head football coach.

November 11, 2008  09:02 AM ET

How many seasons did Ty call? But, good ol' Charlie stays? ND has been overrated for many years and it isn't that tough to get into so they can play that card! Get rid of this guy and get someone who can teach avg players how to play good football and that the world will not come to an end if they lose. It's not the 30's,40's anymore. Most schools can play football and they have some very good players at all of them, not just JD anymore.

November 11, 2008  09:05 AM ET

I guess Weis and Crennel kind of fell off the Belichick tree before they ripened sufficiently. Or maybe they are really just coordinators anyhow.

November 11, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Maybe Weis and his buddy Crennel fell off the Belichick tree before fully ripe. Or, maybe they're both just coordinators period.

November 11, 2008  09:12 AM ET

I've never seen a coach at a top-tier school achieve so little with so much talent. It's so completely disproportionate. He's clearly not the coach we all thought he was. Too bad John Gruden isn't interested. Chucky could bring ND back to glory! It's time for Weis to go.
