Tigers interested in Hoffman?

On Monday night, ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the San Diego Padres had withdrawn their contract offer to Trevor Hoffman, signaling that he will not return to the team in 2009. While it is not certain that Detroit has serious interest in Hoffman, Monday's development could impact the Tigers' off-season plans. At the very least, it made the right-hander a more plausible option on the open market. Hoffman is a client of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, which represents at least two other relievers (right-hander David Weathers and left-hander Arthur Rhodes) who fit the description of pitchers Detroit could pursue. Specifically: Given their ages, they are unlikely to demand long-term contracts.

Troy Percival part II?
Hopefully the Tigers have learned their lesson and will pass on another closer at the end of his career.

That's a good idea^. They have too many candidates within the system to be peddling good prospects away here.

I hope your right. It would be painful to watch them go through that again...

Hoffman is still effective. However, he and his family love the San Diego area. Before his last contract, Cleveland was courting him pretty seriously and he feigned interest in order to drive up the Padres offer. I'm wondering if this is the same type of tactic from the other side. Then again, for a team that lost 99 games and is about to dump their star pitcher, I'm not really sure what a closer would do for them. Should be intersting as the Indians are again looking for a closer.

Didn't Jonesy take them all the way to the World Series?

Having a veteran or two in the bullpen isn't a bad thing if they are the right guys. Jones and Rogers doubled as coaches for many of the young guys. I think bringing in a reliable veteran and our new pitching coach could help corral some of the young pitching talent we do have.

Sure they love San Diego, but let's be honest, it's not like Detroit is like most other cities.

If you read the actual article it also speaks about us courting Brandon Lyon... Who is 12 years younger than Hoff. While I believe a vet presence in the pen is great I still know we need about 2 years before we believe any prospect can handle the job. And we all know how Zumaya has been working out on that same kinda schedule. I say pursue Lyon- the last thing we need is to be re-debating a 43 year old in our bullpen in 2 years as opposed to a 31 year old Lyon... Now with the young team Cleveland has ALL around Hoffmans presence might be better served... Personally.

I still believe Lidge and Hoffman are two differnt stories. And even though Hoffman didn't have alot of opportunities to garner saves last season- his performance was well, sub-par. Personally his reign might only be- at best, at the tail end of twilight, if not completely over...

From "Hells Bell's" to "Get the hell out of here! " It's about time the Pad's dump this grossly overrated gravey sponge. He creates half of his save opportunities by giving up stupid runs. He should thank Bochy for gift wrapping all those saves for him. Please take Khalil Green with you, Trev!!!

Thank you, I know you've been absent from the threads for a little while now. The point I was making is that Lidge was allegedly done after the Pujols HR and he laced up his boot straps and got his mojo back. Juststay away from Billy Wagner, the rat, 'cause he's been done for some time now.
