Portis may not play against Cowboys

The Washington Redskins experienced mixed emotions yesterday as they came back from their bye week, welcoming recently acquired cornerback DeAngelo Hall and expressing concern about injured running back Clinton Portis, whose chances of playing Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys are only "50-50," Coach Jim Zorn said. The Redskins would be severely short-handed at running back if Portis is sidelined and primary backup Ladell Betts misses his fourth straight game because of a sprained left knee. If Betts comes back, he would play ahead of Shaun Alexander, Zorn said, and special teams standout Rock Cartwright would continue to return kicks, though his role in other areas on special teams would be reduced because of the team's depth problems.

The game is all going to depend on how well Tony Romo can throw the ball on his return. He's not 100% and there is a high potential that he'll be off target. This could have been an easy win for Washington but not without Portis.

Just another excuse for the Redskins fans to use if the Cowboys beat them.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about Romo and the cowboy fans.

As a Cowboys fan, I'll take any advantage given. Portis out means a lot. He has a tendancy to run right the hell over the Dallas D. It sucks.

This is some great news to wake up to as I enjoy my morning coffee

How far has Shaun Alexander fallen? They always said he was soft, even when he was getting big numbers with Seattle.

Should be a good game.

November 11, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Big game. Should tell us if the Cowboys will be the team everyone thought they were when the season started and if the Redskins are closer to the team that got beat down 23-6 by the Steelers or the one that looked like a play off team. With out Portis, it is the Redskin QB who is the one to watch. He could not get it done when Portis only ran for 51 yds last game. I think the Cowboys come up big here. There is a reason the Redskins went after Hall.

Watch Alexander runs for over 100.

November 11, 2008  09:24 AM ET

I'd love to see Alexander go over 100 yards, but 100 bucks and my right nut says Portis will be playing Sunday night. Plus it's primetime, so you know Owens has been working on a whole song and dance routine in case he finds the endzone. Should be a good game.

Well put!

I suspect portis will play. And washington will still lose.

Romo's Sophomore season ended in October (technically), and so too will his sophomore slump.

and here I was thinking that you don't risk your best player by putting him in against a team whose season is going down the drain and has nothing to lose by intentionally harming the opponent....like at the end of hockey blowouts when the loser team puts all their goons on the ice to just go out and fight and try to hurt people...

Yea, because the Redskins have clinched a playoff spot with their mighty one game lead over the Cowboys...

you can' t blame a Skins fan for his delusions. They were hyped as much as the Cowboys were preseason by the know-nothings in sports media.

The skins were not hyped in the pre-season - everything I read had them coming in last in the division. They have received a lot of hype after beating the cowboys and stringing some wins together. The cowboys and their fans have nothing to brag about b/c the performance has been abysmal and they have shown that all the hype has not produced wins.

The skins and their fans have to be cautious as well because the only game where thye have played well against a decent team is the cowboys. The looked terrible against the Giants and Steelers. They played well against the saints and Eagles but the saints look to be another hyped team that isn't that good and Philly has been up and down all year. The skins have played poorly against the Rams, Browns, Cardinals and Detroit.

This upcoming game will tell us a lot. A Dallas win can turn the season around while a loss will pretty much put an end to it. For the skins, a loss will create a lot of doubt and while a win will help, it still does not solidify their status as one of hte better teams in the league.
