Italy hero Del Piero to Red Bulls?
Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero is being lined up for a move to the New York Red Bulls. MLS chiefs see Del Piero as the ideal name to energize the soccer market in New York and are monitoring his situation closely. The Juve captain has made no secret of his desire to test himself abroad before he retires and his entourage has already had positive contact with FIFA officials about the strength of American soccer. Del Piero has been in stunning form this season, which will only strengthen his marketing power in the States.

Why not? But doesn't Toronto have first crack at his rights?

Wasn't that the idea behind Donadini? (I think it was him...)

I think this is an excellent move for NY. He has looked great this year with Juve.

The Italian in NY/NJ would embrace him like no other.

Del Piero and Angel would be a nasty tandem, add in Dane Richards' speed and you have one deadly attack...hopefully they can get out of giants stadium by then. But i think Del Piero has a few more years with Juve in him still.

2010 they will have a new home and need some stars to fill it, Angle and Del Piero fit that bill. Do it NY! And screw Toronto, they have had thier chances to dign a DP, do they get to wait and pick whomever? F that

As of the 2006 census, there were 467,015 people reporting Italian ancestry in the Greater Toronto Area. Not bad, although more than 200,000 fewer than in the New York data. Although we care about our soccer team up here and people might actually show up to watch

Wowsers, I can't see a more perfect DP in the MLS than ADP (realistically speaking). We'll have to wait a couple of years for this one though!

The Italian community in New York goes back 3 or 4 generations. They are very Americanized. Soccer is not on the agenda. In Toronto, there are many more people of 1st and 2nd generation. Much more in tune with their heritage. Way more likely to be soccer fans.

Funny, Toronto said they're officially in the hunt for a DP player today. Although word was it was supposed to be Ian Humme who suffered that horrific head injury on the weekend, DelPiero wouldn't be a bad second choice lol I'm pretty sure if he came here, they'd make him mayor of Woodbridge

What happens to JP Angel if Del Piero is signed? Would they have two DP's? That's seems to be working great for the Galaxy. As long as he can still play when they bring him over, it wouldn't hurt.

Doubtful they'd keep two. As long as the league counts 400K against the cap per DP, it's crippling. The cap isn't going up much next year and the proposal to eliminate the 400K charge against the cap for DP players might not come in until the CBA is up for renewal at the end of next year.

We traded a former league MVP for the 2nd DP spot, wasted it on Reyna and now can use it again since he retired. We had two DPs for the last two seasons, no reason not to have that situation again next season.

What would be interesting, is watching him go up against Beckham. Hopefully there will be tons of fouls around the box and those two can have an epic free kick battle!

I thought DP's were year to year, not for the length of the contract. Every team is entitled to one for the season, but if you trade for one you dont keep it forever, the team that traded it to you gets it back at the end of the year. LA only had two because they made an exception for Ruiz and Donovan since they made DP money before the rule came in.

Might as well start the Luis Figo to the MLS rumor too...

Are you nuts? Have you ever been to New York? Seriously, there isn't an Italian in NY that doesn't love soccer no matter how long ago or how recently their ancestors crossed the Atlantic.
Any given weekend you can find Italians in Italian bars, restaurants and cafes all over the NYC metro area watching soccer on TV. It's been that way in NY probably for as long as people can remember, certainly decades.
