Red Sox explored Holliday trade

The Red Sox were briefly involved in trade talks with the Rockies on Matt Holliday, according to a major league source, but bowed out once they heard Colorado's steep asking price. One could only imagine what the Rockies were seeking from the Sox given that they settled on an Oakland A's package of reliever Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, and pitcher Greg Smith. What would be the equivalent? Justin Masterson or Manny Delcarmen? Jacoby Ellsbury? Either Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden? You can bet those players likely were discussed. The Red Sox certainly would have had the resources to sign Holliday long-term, and agent Scott Boras likely would have preferred Boston over Oakland as a destination. Of course, there's always the possibility Oakland flips him at the trading deadline next July if the A's not contending for a wild card/or AL West title.

Great - turn the page. Holliday aint that good anyway....so better for the Sox not to have pulled the trigger. They should make play for Texeira.....he's the man - for now.

Agreed. Teixeira should be the prime focus. Though Holliday may have had decent numbers at Fenway...

Yeah, yeah, yeah........The Red Sox 'explored' getting Holliday and "I've often thought of becoming a golf club.........."

"Red Sox explored Holiiday trade" is the equivalent of "Theo took a crap and wiped his arse" in that both are so blatantly obvious they don't even warrant being a headline. Of course the Sox explored it. They explore everything just like any GM worth their salt would.

Did he wash his hands afterwards?

I was hoping for a package of Bay/Buchholz in a Holliday deal. Actually, I almost expected it.

November 12, 2008  04:48 PM ET

I think this i blowed outta proportion i think alamost every team inquired about Holliday. im glad the BoSox didnt pull the trigger I agree with above Texeira is the guy they should go after

November 12, 2008  05:15 PM ET

If Boston gets Texeria, with Ortiz as the DH, that will leave Youkilis and Lowell fighting for playing time at third.

November 12, 2008  05:53 PM ET

Sox are not going to get Tex.

Its Angels or Yanks.

Dont give me that hometown nonsense of the orioles or Nats. It'd be like A-rod in Texas all over again

November 12, 2008  05:53 PM ET

Lowell's trade value is really low and they'd have to eat his contract to trade him anyways

November 12, 2008  06:21 PM ET

No one was going to give up any real talent for a guy who is going to be a free agent in a year and who is not going to sign a contract for less than the GNP of the Honduras. The Rockies should have kept him and perhaps some desperate team would have coughed up real talent at the trade deadline. Colorado Rockies - worst owners and management in baseball.

Let's all see how Holliday does this year away from the Rockies.
