Dodgers offer Manny up to $60M

The Dodgers' initial offer to Manny Ramirez includes a club option for a third year that could increase the value of the contract to $60 million, according to sources speaking on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter. The offer stands until Thursday, the final day of the Dodgers' exclusive negotiating window with Ramirez, but indications are that their pursuit of the All-Star outfielder will extend beyond then. Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, has made it clear that the proposed deal isn't long enough. Exactly how far owner Frank McCourt would go to re-sign Ramirez remains uncertain. One team source said McCourt is open to improving the offer by guaranteeing the third year of the contract.

Shhh....If you bring up it's name it might show up here and I know we wouldn't want that ;)

Manny walked away from Boston and tarnished his image somewhat because $40M over 2 years was not acceptable. So how is 3 years for $60M which is the same base salary of $20M a year that he had in his original deal going to entice him to sign? Manny wants Arod type money so how is offering $7.5M less than that supposed to make Manny want to sign that contract right now? Dodgers basically told Manny thanks for a great 2 months but we don't have the kind of money you are looking for.

Manny is a great talent, but even a GREATER pain in the arse. The leagues ought to stipulate that he gets paid in lentils and beans.

I see Omar giving him lots of money, lentils, beans, rice and whatever else he wnats.

Wow...way to go Dodgers. It's been made obvious what Manny wants, and that's not enough money. You're offering him a Lexus, when he's clearly made it known that he wants the Ferrari, which he'll get. This was to please the fans, "well, we tried oh well."

November 12, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Seems like not enough money either. Manny walked away from $20 per...
Personally I think that contract is more than fair for Manny, someone may pay more.
Muck Fanny.

Only the Yankees will be stupid enough to give Manny more than a three year deal. Manny has got a max of two good years in him, maybe more as a DH.

November 12, 2008  05:05 PM ET

Though this only an intial offer, we will see maybe end up 4 years w/option for the fifth when all things are done...

November 12, 2008  05:45 PM ET

Kind of on the right track Dodgers... but you better make it 3-years $70

November 12, 2008  06:18 PM ET

There is a huge difference between A-Rod and Manny. Much as I detest A-Rod, I will admit the guy is a defensive asset. Further he can steal a base, score from first on a long single and keeps himself in top condition. Manny is a one tool player, well to be accurate, he is a tool. I really hope the Yankees get suckered into signing him for six years, if Manny thought Beantown was a nasty place, wait until he jogs out a few ground balls in New York. I guarantee that whatever team signs Manny, they will regret it.

Common Manny, stop being greedy and take the cash!!

November 12, 2008  06:44 PM ET

old news?..... Teams have to stop learning to spend smart. For the price of ARod and Jeter the Rays fielded a AL Championship Team.

I hope Manny catches a case of the clap so bad that a urologist would suggest that he just cut the damn thing off rather than risk gangrene.

Maybe more as DH? Where the hell would you play him if you were the Yankees, left field? Get outta here.............
