Dynamo's Ching linked to Seattle FC

07:40 AM ET 11.12 | The Houston Dynamo's two top stars could be on the move this off-season. There have long been rumors about Brian Ching potentially making the move to the Seattle Sounders FC. Ching played college soccer in Washington and also began his pro playing career there for the Spokane Shadow. Will the Dynamo really let him go? Then there is Dwayne DeRosario, who has long been linked to a potential move to Toronto FC. A Toronto native, DeRosario is a cult hero up north and TFC has tons of allocation money and first-round draft picks it could use to lure make Houston consider dealing. With Stuart Holden as a likely replacement, Houston could very well consider moving DeRosario to strengthen in other areas.

This would make sense and could be very wise. Both have been top-notch MLS players and still have some good years left, but Houston could start a downward slide if they don't begin retooling as key players age. Plus Houston reminds me of the NE Patriots, with the team concept above any single player.

Yeah, Ching will do well in the PAC-NW. I think this could free up the Dynamo to pick up a younger striker, maybe from central/south America like Carracho. I am with you J. Hova, do it. Plus as good as Ching is, he is quite prone to streakiness. I'd talk someone a little less prolific but more even, especially if they keep up the D with the back 4. Maybe move D-Ro up top?

this is all skeptical at best.... Ives simply listed the possiblity of the moves... and why they would make sense....

as for Seattle, they are already dumping 400k on their DP, and probably 200-300k on Keller (im sure), dropping another lump sum on a forward will be tough to do.... they still have to establish a full squad that will have chemistry and quality... it's possible, but it will be tough.... how much does ching take up now??

as for TFC, this seems a solid move.... they are also talking about bringing in a DP... i have a feeling if they get DeRo, he will BE their DP... TFC will find it tough to make enough room for a DP + DeRo... this move is likely and will eventually happen anyhow....

as for Hou- this would be an excellent move for them... dropping 2 aging stars will open up ALOT of cap space... also with the rumors of them picking up a DP this off-season they could find themselves back in the hunt.... i would think their first move would be a forward pickup... with Seattle having the expansion draft, Hou will have to be wary of who to protect...

THE BIG QUESTION is going to be, who will deliver the balls to ching up top?? ching is only as good as the wingers around him... majority of the goals he gets come from being set up by his wings... Hou have a solid chemistry, and if ching removes himself, he may not find that chemistry again... a move to seattle may show him notching 8-9 goals (an average MLS forward)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I wonder if I can get a refund on my season tickets. I'm not paying to watch Ching.

But soccer is a much harder game to cheat (and get away with) in than the NFL

Why would Seattle want Ching when they can get the younger, more promising Nate Jaqua for less money? Rumor has it that Jaqua came back to Houston only after negotiating a contract wherein he could leave after the season for Seattle. He is a Eugene native that played at UofP who could draw fans from Oregon, especially if they don't land an expansion team.

Yea, I'm completely with you. I can't remember the last time I saw Ching score a goal that wasn't served to him on a silver platter. It's all tap ins and 2 yrd headers into empty nets when the keeper has already been beaten. If Sounders pick him up I'm going to be severely upset, hell, its just a rumor now and im already spun up.

November 12, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Pawn - how do you really feel about Ching? HA.

November 12, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Very doubtful. DeRosario just inked a new contract either earlier this season or last (I can't remember) and Ching is pretty much the face of the franchise. Right now it looks like Nate Jaqua one of Ching's strike partners will be heading for Seattle so I doubt the Dynamo will let Ching go as well.

Personally I could live with Ching leaving but DeRo is the key to this team and it would be foolish to let him go. The DeRo TFC rumors were also swirling around before he signed the new contract so I wouldn't exopect him to be heading anywhere.

November 12, 2008  02:16 PM ET

SEASOCCER- excellent point with Jaqua... failed to even think it....

with the expansion draft coming up i think Jaqua will be their prime option....

November 12, 2008  03:02 PM ET

They won't get rid of Ching, but DeRo would make sense. The midfield depth of this team is redic and Holden, though not as good is much younger and is on the up slope not the plateu of DeRo. As for forwards I think Kamara's on contract for another year but he and Ching will be all they have after Jaqua leaves, Wondolowski had left me wanting several times.

They NEED to get a 'keeper to train under Onstad, Caig has to go. Getting Zach Wells back from DC wouldn't be too expensive.

November 12, 2008  03:08 PM ET

smitty- what about trading for Seitz?? if you are looking for a GK to build for the 2010 season, Seitz may be a great option..... his solid performances with the youth squads should emphasize quality....

wells has been crap all season.... theres a reason why he's been dropped as the starting GK at DCU.... Seitz or Pickens are solid prospects, but you have to believe that LA are scouting as well

November 12, 2008  05:06 PM ET

If Seattle add Ching at another 200K, Seattle is looking at building the rest of the team with 1.8M left in the pocket. 20 more players would have the rest of the team average 90K a year.

don't forget their 1 player that wins the reality elimination show, they can definately sign him for the league min

November 12, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Maybe I don't get it...if the rest of the team could average $90K/year - why are there quality players "retiring" at 24 because they made $15/K their rookie year?

November 12, 2008  05:46 PM ET

It's true Wells had a crap season, but he was solid at back-up here in Houston and I think under Kinnear he can shine as a starter, after Onstad finally retires of course.

As far as LA... why do I have to believe in anything they do? They suck.

Seitz is good btw, he'd also be good.

I miscalculated, its actually 70K left per player for 20. The problem is that 3 or 4 other players may make between 80K and 100K leaving very little for the rest. In some cases teams are staying way under the cap. Not spending as much as they can to make their team "profitable."
