Joe Pa won't blame quarterback

Penn State's high-powered offense has been stuck in neutral the past two games. The Nittany Lions have produced just five field goals and three touchdowns in a seven-point victory at Ohio State and a one-point loss at Iowa. There is plenty of blame to go around for the slump that has ruined 9-1 Penn State's perfect season and its shot at a berth in the national championship game. Quarterback Daryll Clark has taken his share of hits on and off the field, but even he acknowledged yesterday that his numbers are hard to defend. Clark has not thrown a touchdown pass in 10 quarters and has not run for one in eight entering No. 7 Penn State's Big Ten Conference game Saturday against Indiana at Beaver Stadium. Through the first eight games, he accounted for 19 touchdowns -- 11 passing and eight rushing. He was dealt his first loss as a starter, completing just 9 of 23 passes for 86 yards against Iowa. Clark also threw a costly interception, setting up the winning field goal in the Hawkeyes' 24-23 upset victory. "I think he's being too tough on himself," coach Joe Paterno said. "In fact, I told him that [Sunday] on the practice field. I think he's done fine. They dropped passes on him. "... When we talk about why we're not being a little more productive offensively, we haven't made a lot of great catches, and we dropped some passes that would have an impact on whether we go for a field goal or we get a touchdown."

C'mon man....this dude needs to retire. He was shaking and moving his cane back and forth. He could have keeled over right there? Don't be blaming the QB it is not his fault the team came up short. He was trying his best and if he does not have it "the stuff" - then he just does not have "it".

I had really hoped Joe Pa would get one more shot at the title this year to cap off his amazing coaching career.

November 12, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Was Joe Pa even aware that they lost the game before someone asked him about it in the post game interview?

November 12, 2008  08:42 AM ET

JoePa will be back next year and we're still ranked 7th or 8th depending on which poll you read. JoePa and Clark are both doing a good job.

November 12, 2008  08:55 AM ET

It's not Clark's fault. He just needs to realize that and step up against Michigan State with a Rose Bowl trip on the line.

That is because Joe Paterno has class. Penn St. is having a good year and most importantly his players will not be working on a garbage truck 5 years out of school.

November 12, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Was there ever a question that JoePa would blame his QB?

November 12, 2008  11:07 AM ET

That's why JoePa is great; he don't throw no one under the bus. I bet Clark's concussion had a bit to do with the performances with Ohio St. and Iowa.

November 12, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Why did Penn State go for one point vs two on there last TD?

Not without on the job training! Besides, there are only so many garbage trucks to go around.

THey will cause TT and Bama gonna lose. Penn State is still one of the top two teams in the country, probably number 1. They had one mistake, they will still rectify their situation and JoePa will get his 3rd national championship. You all better recognize JoePa is STILL the greatest NCAA coach active today. Mark my words Clark is still one of the top three quarterbacks in the NCAA and he is still a contender for the Heisman and the NC Title. Penn State is the team to beat, son!

I thought we had an agreement - NO dePENNds State posts until JoePa's diaper is changed. Geez, the coaches box smells like cat litter.

He can't blame the QB 'cause he can't see the QB. His retinas were melted when the sun light refracted through his Yugo windshields.

dePENNds State will go to the Rose Bowl where USC will hang a half a hundred on them by the third qtr.

Ha ha you very funny. Doesn't change the fact that Penn State would destroy Florida in a NC game. Doesn't matter though because Penn State is only a one loss team and will be taking a place in the NC game. Florida lost to Old Miss and Penn State lost a close one to a very strong Iowa team. It's simple statistics, son. Penn State gonna win it all. And if the haters put us in the Rose Bowl, we would stomp USC down. They got nothin' on us. They beat Ohio State, big deal so did we.

Obviously, there isn't a rule of not smoking funny weed before posting. Penn State has almost no chance to play for the BCS championship at this point. Pretty much everyone knows that it will be the winner of the SEC championship vs the winner of the Big 12 unless a meteor hits the U.S. and they call off the season.

You're stupid and now the world knows it.

I challenge you to find one, ONE, non-dePENNds State homer who would agree with you. Can't find it.

Yes, and how did USC handle the Suckeyes? And what was your score in that game? Exactly.

You're right the SEC's former players have job seniority.
